The photos are in batches, so we see a couple charting the development of the Pier Head from the 1990s to today. We also see the Goree Piazzas from different angles, revealing the changing waterfront. There are explicit links between the captions, so this is much more than a scattershot ‘photo album’ approach. And it went on: “It was once a planner’s dream, an idea explained in models and maps. But suddenly Liverpool is stepping into the promised age of the traffic-free shopping centre.” The only one of Liverpool's founding streets not in existence was renamed High Street in the 18th century. It's thought the original street was named after the jugglers performed there.

From Penny Lane to Mathew Street, there's no doubt the Fab Four put many of our most famous places on the map. Falkner Street was originally known as Crabtree Lane, but was renamed Falkner Street in the early to mid 19th century after Edward Falkner, who is rumoured to have raised a thousand men in under one hour for the defence of the town when the French threatened to invade. Lime Street is one of Liverpool’s most famous and well-known streets – and most of that is because of the train station here!Gore’s/Kelly’s Directories. Many street directories included folded maps of the city. These have been removed and are available separately. The houses in that area were largely built in the late 18th – early 19th centuries, and they included the notorious court houses as well as terraces. I’m certain that the demolition and clearance projects were more enthusiastic than they needed to be, as it was the 1960s and I think many things seemed possible in the new future that was promised! I think the state of the buildings would have varied, but I’m sure the authorities didn’t consider anything other than large scale demolition. On one end of Hope Street stands the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. This modernist structure, completed in 1967, boasts a unique circular design, and its many stained glass windows make for a colourful interior. This is such a wonderful place to walk along and snap photos as you go – it’s one of the prettiest streets in Liverpool.

During his lifetime Francis Frith himself had a steadfast belief in making photographs available to the greatest number of people, and we are delighted that the wonderful selection of nostalgic historical photographs in The Francis Frith Collection will now be seen and enjoyed by people all over the world on Find My Past." Other photos show ground-based scenes. There’s a busy intersection on the Strand in one. Little more than the stanchions which held the rails up remaining in another. (This allows Hollinghurst to date that particular image to 1957). History of Liverpool in eight chapters Even 200 years after Williamson offered ready work to the men of Edge Hill, his tunnels are still keeping the locals busy. Copies of Frith’s photographs proved immensely popular with the general public. Thanks to the rapid expansion of the Victorian railway system, Britons were now travelling in greater numbers than ever before, fuelling a huge demand for photographic souvenirs. The main street in Liverpool is arguably the busy shopping area of Church Street. This popular shopping street is home to an array of high-street stores and is just outside Liverpool One. Although it’s not one of the most famous streets in Liverpool, it’s arguably the “main” street in the city. What is the most popular street in Liverpool?

Ken Rogers, author of the best selling Lost Tribe book spoke about Everton's lost streets with the Liverpool Echo in 2011. Ken said: "No doubts many of the old houses were in desperate need of repair and even demolition. But just about everything was wiped out - every street, every corner shop and most of the famous pubs that were all part of the community."
