In terms of stills the Canon is no slouch either, with colours veering toward the warm straight out of the camera. A 'kit' zoom this may be, but it's sharp from corner to corner and the lens' maximum aperture of f/3.5 is still sufficient to achieve the professional-looking shallow depth of field effects that we'd expect of a DSLR. Canon EOS 1200D: Verdict The EOS Rebel T5, or 1200D as it’s known outside of North America, is Canon’s latest entry-level DSLR. Launched in February 2014 it replaces the three year old T3 / 1100D. Three years is a long time in this industry, during which time mirrorless cameras have really gone after the budget DSLR market. So what’s new on the T5 / 1200D to attract entry-level buyers? The only bad thing is the instruction manual. It was helpful, but too much gobbledegook. If you buy this camera, get a good after-market book such as "David Busch's Canon EOS Rebel T5/1200D". We tested the EOS 1200D with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II kit lens, which offers a fairly standard focal range for a kit lens and crucially includes image stabilisation. This is important for Canon, as competitors like Sony, Olympus and Pentax all offer image stabilisation in their DSLRs. The difference between Canon (and Nikon) and the others is that Sony, Olympus and Pentax have opted for stabilisation via the camera body, rather than the lens, which therefore works with their entire range of lenses. Canon's system is obviously limited by which lenses you choose, but it does offer the slight advantage of showing the stabilising effect through the viewfinder. Canon and Nikon also claim that a lens-based anti-shake system is inherently better too, but the jury's out on that one.

The EOS T5 / 1200D is capable of continuous shooting at 3fps and should maintain that rate for 69 large fine JPEGs or 6 RAW fles. To test it, I fitted the T5 / 1200D with a freshly formatted Sandisk UHS-1 SD card rated at 45MB/s, set the image size to large fine JPEG and selected the continuous shooting drive mode. With the shutter release held down the T5 / 1200D fired off a sequence of 100 frames with metronomic regularity and would would most likely have continued well beyond that had I not taken my finger off the button. I timed the 100 frame burst at exactly the quoted 3fps. Set to RAW, the T5 / 1200D managed the same 3fps rate for a burst of 8 shots before stalling and continuing at a much slower pace around 1fps. All of the sample images in this review were taken using the 18 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 6Mb.

Canon's Picture Styles are preset combinations of different sharpness, contrast, saturation and colour tone settings. You can tweak these Picture Controls to your liking, and there are also User Defined styles so that you can create your own look. Standard Despite this higher resolution, the 1200D’s new sensor only represents a very small increase in dimensions from that of its predecessor, allowing Canon to keep the size of the camera to a minimum (it weighs in at a pokey 480g with battery and card included). The EOS 1200D has a bigger 3-inch and higher-resolution 460k dot fixed LCD screen than the the older EOS 1100D, but it's still one of the main ways that it achieves its budget price-point. The bright Pentamirror optical viewfinder is the same as the previous model, offering 95% coverage of the scene, 0.80x magnification and dioptre control for glasses wearers. Depth of Field Preview is available when assigned to the SET button via Custom Function 8-5.Inevitably some of the specification, including a maximum three frames per second capture speed, feels modest. The LCD screen is also fixed in place and cannot be swivelled to enable easier high or low angle shots, though it didn't stop us from getting some great pictures nonetheless. The flash settings on the EOS 1200D are Auto, Manual Flash On/Off, and Red-Eye Reduction. These shots of a white coloured wall were taken at a distance of 1m. Whereas at one time the cheaper DSLR in any manufacturer's range involved investing in a quartet of AA batteries to slot into its handgrip, even this cheapest Canon offers a rechargeable lithium-ion battery off the bat, and a standalone LP-E10 charger to replenish it with. In live view mode the Canon screen provides a bright contrasty image that can be seen from a wide angle – 170 degrees according to the specification. Like all screens it’s an effort to use in bright sunlight, but it coped better than the Sony A3000’s screen which is very difficult to see in bright sunshine. Of course with an optical viewfinder available this isn’t such an issue unless you’re shooting movies. It’s worth noting that thanks to its 100% electronic composition, you can use the screen or the viewfinder to frame movies on the A3000, whereas on DSLRs you can only use the screen for movies.
