In the run-up to release, multiple demos were developed, and the team adjusted the game using feedback from players. The fifth and final demo, released in September, included features from all the previous demos and included elements such as Friend Summons, and the Abilink and Norende reconstruction social elements.

It gives control to the first three playable characters as they fight through a dungeon and battle a golem boss. The group goes to Yulyana and DeRosso, who reveal a message left by an "angel", a version of Agnès from another world who was betrayed by Airy; the two have been planning for Ouroboros' arrival, and the group resolves to stop the demon. At the same time, a great chasm opens up beneath the village of Norende, killing all of its inhabitants except a young shepherd named Tiz Arrior. Agnès notices the city's sudden change from a modest place dedicated to nature into a haven for the shallow-minded and vain.

A pseudo-sequel, Bravely Default II, was announced late 2019 as being in development, and released in February 2021. Despite moving away from the Final Fantasy series, it retained a battle system and world setting in common with many Final Fantasy games. The final, fifth demo, was released on September 12th, 2012, and includes all elements from the four previous demos, and adds Friend Summons, Abilink, and the Norende Village recovery system.

Several video clips demonstrating the work in progress were shown, though few details were available. As a vestal of the Wind Crystal finds the crystal consumed in a dark energy, a youth named Tiz Arrior finds his home of Norende being swallowed up by the earth with his younger brother falling to his death. With the revelation that Alternis possessed an identical Book of D, the group finds itself consumed in the light of Airy's brooch. Bravely Default is truly a rebirth of what a JRPG can be, and what some imagination outside the box can do for any given genre that is getting a little too old for it's own good. On top of tons of job grinding, this one has time management mechanics and even a pay to win microtransaction they threw in there, how any of that is supposed to be fun or enhance the gameplay in any way is beyond me.An earlier false report in Nintendo's financial report indicated that its European release would be in 2014, but this was later corrected by Nintendo of Europe.

Defeated in her chrysalis-like form, Airy finds herself outmatched as she falls back to the Dark Aurora above the chasm to gain a new form and power. At the Japan Game Awards, it received the Future Game Award in 2012 and the Excellence Award in 2013. The fight ends with Alternis defeated and unmasked, the group shocked to see him resemble Ringabel, before the dark knight falls overboard. After taking Egil to Caldisla to ease the mind of innkeeper Karl since the death of his son Owen, the only crystal left for them to cleanse is in Eternia.Like its progenitor series Final Fantasy, summoned monsters appear, but the traditional summons, like Ifrit and Shiva, are absent. The demo allows the player to build a part of Norende Village, which transfers over to the full game when played for the first time. The main challenge for the team was making Bravely Default a traditional RPG without overloading it with nostalgic elements. Assuming her true monstrous caterpillar form, which Ringabel recognizes as the demon that killed the Edea of his world, whose wings were a countdown of her evolution, Piercer of Boundaries Airy reveals she linked ten of thousand worlds for over 1100 millennia for the will of her master: Ouroboros, the God of Destruction. Only 8 jobs are acquired via the main questline, the rest being the rewards of the sub-scenario quests.

This styling was influenced by a sequence featuring Japanese idol group AKB48 in an unspecified television drama.

In Bravely Default, quest through Luxendarc to awaken the crystals in a unique and innovative RPG experience, only on Nintendo 3DS family systems. Downloadable content in the form of additional character costumes were made available both through promotional codes and post-release content.
