About this deal

As the young pair grow ever closer, Charlie's mother (Morton) becomes increasingly concerned for her sick boy and obsessive in her quest to shelter him from harm. Can’t Come Out To Play explores ideas surrounding the role of the woman; with the two main female characters representing completely opposing ideologies.

He reminded us what real-life horror looks like with HENRY, now brings you a all new psychological horror film entitled: The Harvest. I can see the reason for that but actually it is quite different as you'll see from the twist at the end (which I did see coming but was still a fantastic idea). The film’s underlying is a positive one; despite the unhappiness felt by many in the film they all act unselfishly, or at least that’s probably what they’re telling themselves. There was some fine acting from the youngsters Charlie Tahan and especially Natasha Calis as the friend who puts everything on the line to rescue him. and there folks lies this truly ENGROSSING thriller, that left me feeling as though I had been treated to an Oscar worthy production, gripping from beginning to end. Mary Ann moves in next door and befriends Andy however nothing is what it seems at Andy house with a shock of what is in the basement. A frantic Katherine, refusing to accept that there is no hope for her son, subdues Richard with a sedative and pursues the children.

It manages to find its stride at the half-way point, but up until then it does drag ever so slightly. The film premiered on October 19, 2013 as part of the Chicago International Film Festival and was screened on July 21, 2014 in Canada as part of the Fantasia International Film Festival. It should not be dismissed as ‘just another’ mundane ‘horror’ film but should appeal to those who want more than John Carpenter soundtracks and bumps in the night to keep them engaged. This is a commendable film from McNaughton with an almost touching and clever treatment of clashing perspectives, those of the innocent children and those of grieving adults. For someone so young she is an utter badass, showing that young girls can be just as tough as their seniors.

So much in fact that, the caring demeanor of his mother suddenly takes a turn from sweet yet tired to a more domineering almost "Annie Wilkes like persona". He truly plays the role of a grieving father quite masterfully, so much to where you begin to feel his sadness and pain, it's simply brilliant. As an Oscar nominee, Morton is capable of far more than this script provided and rather than letting the tension play out naturally, certain scenes were definitely over-acted. Katherine is well respected medial professional that is until she goes home where both her and her husband have been home schooling their only son Andy who has a number of medical conditions. I agree totally with other reviews who say that it is definitely a thriller but the suspense doesn't build steady enough which ruins it.For me it was an hour and twenty minutes well spent and I will be definitely recommending it to friends and family and of course to all you kind souls bothering to read my take on this truly underrated movie.
