About this deal

Karolina Pavlova, born Karolina Jaenisch in 1807, was a Russian poet and translator and presided over a famous Moscow literary salon. The inevitable result of privilege and power versus a victim’s truth forces the family to move and change their identity. Claire’s father, based on the real-life dastard Lord Lucan, loved her mother, until he grew tired of her. Claire was a young child when someone broke into her home, killed her nanny and brutally attacked her mother.

An ex-pupil of Manchester Grammar School, and with two degrees in History, he has been a full-time historian and critic for three decades. I wondered, at that point, whether the book had an editor, or whether it was just so long, they’d simply skipped over the page. As such, The Double Life of Benson Yu is a difficult book to read — not because the text is challenging, but because there’s a prevailing feeling of dread that permeates it from cover to cover. Philby was an intelligence officer with MI6 - and also a double agent with the KGB, passing highly classified information to the Russians. This book just got better and better… Holy smokes did I dig myself into this book and not let go… Brilliant. This thriller has more the feel of a Joyce Carol Oates or Joyce Maynard, with significant character development, and the "thrilling" elements often take lesser importance that the experiences and feelings of the characters.
