About this deal

Even having to include or mention these characters in the book , seemingly to please an audience is in itself out dated. Of course it wouldn’t be Bond without its cast of infamous characters like M, Q and Moneypenny – and the author has a golden eye when it comes to what readers may want and need from this novel.

Zoals ergens in het verhaal gezegd wordt: door leugens vaak met veel nadruk te herhalen gaan mensen dat als de waarheid zien. The agents task is to get to the truth as Rattenfänger’s sticky fingers seem to be all over this too. The start of a brand new trilogy following MI6's agents with a licence to kill, that blows the world of James Bond wide open! Her re-imagining of some of our favourite characters and world building will delight any fan of James Bond and Ian Fleming. The world of Bond is in expert hands’ Tim Glister, author of Red Corona You may also be interested in.

And so part of the initial fun of Double or Nothing is seeing where all these new pieces fit on the old game board. Sherwood, is the first female author that joins the cannon, and despite not quite achieving Fleming’s writing style, she has created a fast-paced, multifaceted narrative that keeps you turning pages.

In his absence, MI6 is left struggling to pick up the pieces in the face of the world’s deadliest threat yet. Ondanks de kwaliteiten van dit boek denk ik eerder dat Kim Sherwood de perfecte kandidaat is om het James Bond-universum de doodsteek te geven. She draws characters and names, plot tropes, back story and plants 'easter eggs' from the entire 70 years of Bond history. It therefore comes across to me as a kind of 'pilot' episode to introduce other '00's' for other future books. In fact it bacame too tiresome and time consuming continuously re-reading passages to comprehend them, which ,coupled with the poor characterisation, and somewhat unfocussed plot, led me to decide I had better things to read and I gave up two thirds through. Populating the story with several new characters, more 00’s than we’ve seen before, but also peppered throughout with familiar character favorites as well.

Let those of us who are going to get them, get them with just the one clue and feel clever, and move on for those readers who are less obsessive about Fleming's back catalogue. Our three heroes all break the great white hero mould in one way or several (gender, sexuality, race, ability, background) and the book considers the forms and manners of violence that were likely invisible or under-considered by previous generations of authors.

This book is more possible than the You g Bond series in which James pulls of stuff that would give Enid Blyton's the five nightmares for life. However, in other ways Kim Sherwood misses the mark I found I don’t gel with it in the same way as the Ian Fleming originals. Poor Major Boothroyd (Q) has been replaced by a computer, with the credit for that invention not belonging to him but a Mrs Keator (who?

Stylish, explosive, fresh and fun, Kim Sherwood takes one of the world’s most beloved series and makes it her own. After all, if you can license a whole series of adventures with other double O agents; they will stay in copyright much longer. Supremely skilled, ruthless, with a license to kill, they will do anything to protect their country.

It seems a more accurate reflection of the real world and certainly the direction of the spy-craft genre. Double or Nothing has plenty of feints and misdirection and at times I was anything but certain who was on the side of the angels and who had done a deal with the devil.
