About this deal

Dr Catherine Gildiner chronicles five clients, most who suffered severe abuse, over the course of several years as their therapist. There's a sameness to each of the five sections – presentation, therapy, wellness, followed by a revisitation by Gildiner as she wrote this book – and although each of the five patients came from very different backgrounds, and although each of them suffered very different types of childhood abuse (from neglect to sexual abuse to a residential school survivor), there's a sameness to their therapeutic journeys as well. Consent is touched on in the author's note, but when the author mentions talking about the book with her patients throughout the text, the exchange sounds more like Catherine Gildiner telling the patients they will be included rather than asking permission. I’m not sure the quality of her work as a therapist, but I do think she believed she was good at her job.

Maybe I’m pessimistic but the stories didn’t inspire me about the power of the human spirit but instead horrified me that anyone could be capable of the cruelty depicted. I recognize that the dialogue attributed to Alana during this portion of her therapy is meant to convey the suppressed anger starting to bubble up as well as the misdirection of that anger. I learned so much about the power of the human subconscious and the ability of psychotherapy to break through. His boss, the owner of a trucking company, seeks out Gildiner’s help after Danny’s wife and daughter die in a car accident. When her mother abandons the family, Madeline’s father takes up with another severely disturbed woman.

What first struck me was Gildiner seemed woefully unprepared to be a therapist, through no fault of her own.Gildiner’s fifth and final patient is a successful and wealthy antique dealer living in New York named Madeline Arlington. Although their individual circumstances are unique, all of her patients are shown dealing with abuse or neglect by a parent, revealing the ways that childhood events and patterns have a lasting effect. Gildiner’s subject is heroism — writ large and with poignant specificity in five unforgettable patients’ lives .

Insightful psychological lessons of special interest to readers on therapeutic journeys of their own. Visi penki aprašyti atvejai – tai iš pažiūros sėkmingi žmonės, padarę šaunias karjeras, sukūrę šeimas, jokių materialių dalykų nestokojantys.Keli metai vien tam, kad pajudintum paviršių, išleisiantį visus demonus ir priežastis kodėl žmogui dabar gyventi sunku.

My guess is that they agreed based on the idea that there would be more focus on the hero, less on the trauma and victimization. I gasped out loud when she told a male sexual abuse survivor that he was likely chosen by the priest because of his attractiveness and was glad he walked out for several weeks. Laura agreed, but the worst aspect for her was that although she’d done everything possible to rise above her family circumstances, she was now wallowing in filth, just as they always had. There’s no doubt that Good Morning, Monster was an interesting read: The author, a therapist, presents here five case studies of particularly troubled patients and how she helped them, and her writing is engaging. While half of the book is thought-provoking and inspiring, the other half more like grossly irresponsible trauma porn. Psychologist Catherine Gildiner profiles five patients with whom she worked during her career as a therapist. The immense suffering and horrific abuse these men and women have endured is beyond belief of the human mind to comprehend. Mostly I just felt sad at the capacity humans have for hurting other humans, for the ways that hurt can easily get passed on generations down the line, and for all the times the people who are SUPPOSED to notice and follow up on suspected neglect or abuse just .
