I was brought up in Chelsea (the one in London) and they had a wonderful children's library right near the fire station on the King's Road. I picked up reading very quickly, and whizzed through from the big print of 1a to the small print of 12c! I do remember liking Sandy Bear and Barny Bear, though - Barny needed earmuffs to hibernate because Sandy snored.

but I do remember being bitterly disappointed that I couldn't read after my first day at school, as I wanted to be able to read my Jack and Jill comic!

NOTE: This is not the original book but a high-quality reproduction made on a professional printing machine. In fact, Janet and John, two of the best-known characters in English literature, have been missing for around 25 years now. If you were at infant school in the UK during the 1950s and 1960s there is a good chance you learned to read with the Janet and John series of books. I found an old book my sister or brother had had in school, but I don't think there were any characters in it. I remember standing in line at the teacher's desk and waiting to read from my book; a story about rabbits; I can still remember the picture!
