About this deal

Indeed, it is edited in a way that makes very large sections of the film look as if they were prepared for a gigantic MTV video or special program. The movie also stops a little after Let’s Dance, but there’s a reason for that: Bowie had become a celebrity.

While this hasn’t stopped anyone from doing so (see 2020’s disaster Stardust), Bowie’s estate has done very well with sticking to the late singer’s wishes. Surrounds are active, offering panning effects and channel separation, and there's a fuller sound for concert performances. Told through sublime, kaleidoscopic, never-before-seen footage, performances and music, MOONAGE DAYDREAM is the first officially sanctioned film to explore Bowie’s creative, musical and spiritual journey, guided by Bowie’s own narration.Disappointingly, it refuses to fully engage the entirety of its subject’s output, instead presenting retreads of footage and periods that have been extensively (and more definitively) covered elsewhere. Consumer Products by Snow Commerce, which is soley responsible for the site's content and all aspects of your purchase. Throughout the movie’s 2 hour runtime, Bowie talks about almost everything: music, art, life, mental health and a slew of other topics.

In fact, there is plenty of footage where I think that the difference in quality between the native 4K and 1080p presentations is insignificant, and these are not the areas where standard definition content is used. I am glad to have seen it but cannot imagine revisiting it regularly; I sincerely wish I had enjoyed it more than I did. It doesn’t offer much by way of intimacy on the subject, failing to penetrate the defensive layers that Bowie built around himself in his public personas. Even some of David Bowie's biggest fans agree that he was a strange character who lived his life in a strange way.

As odd as it may sound, it feels like filler material in a massive show-off piece that simply takes advantage of Bowie's strangeness, fully aware of its market potential as well. Visually, the film seems like an 1990s-era MTV documentary, with short snippets from various sources and time periods flying by in almost kaleidoscopic fashion. One could successfully argue that it goes even a step further, prioritizing its style rather than its subject matter). I've been lucky enough to interview several of my favorite musicians over the years and go to concerts from time to time.

Criterion’s release boasts a small yet strong slate of extras, but it’s the impeccable A/V presentation that makes this a worthy addition to any Bowie fan’s home video collection. The DVD and Blu-ray of Moonage Daydream that was released last year had little to no bonus features. The film is guided by David Bowie’s own narration and is the first officially sanctioned film on the artist. If you're looking for the standard issue biopic, like the director Brett Morgen's earlier documentary, 2012's Stones biopic, Crossfire Hurricane, then Morgen's take on Bowie might not be for you.

For one, Morgen acknowledges the history of mental illness in his family that affected his beloved brother Terry, and how it may have influenced some of his art.
