About this deal

For the whitewash, you might have to seal/prime with clear shellac or primer to prevent bleedthrough. I was asked the other day how I painted the gold on the crozius for the Dark Vengeance Chaplain I posted. This is one of those questions I get asked ALL the time – How to paint over stain while leaving some of the original stain color showing through?

To that end, I've used eight plastic bases that are unprimed and won't have anything on them other than the snow mix. Washes are perfect for blending the edges of camou-flage colors with the base colors of a model, and they can be mixed with pigments to obtain a wide range of effects such as oil and flaked rust, mud, earth, dust, moss, etc. A few tips when applying a wax (which you may already know) are work in small sections, less is more, and if you’re having an issue with the look of it, it’s better to buff sooner rather than later. I've gone through and pulled photos from older posts that I thought illustrated the important points as I went along. There are tons of ways to paint any metallic, but this is my "go to" method for quick and basic gold. Then I realized when watching a video on YouTube that I should also be adding a drop of dish washing soap to help the paint flow into the crevices. Since the areas of the miniature that will be in shadow are basecoated dark, the shadows will be easy to get sufficiently dark.

The less time that dark and black coloured clothes are in water and the shorter the wash time is, the less likely your clothes are to fade. That's not to say it will take you forever to line highlight a model, but as with any aspect of painting, it takes some time to get really nice results. As an alternative, get some Mage Knight figures, pre-painted, and apply the washes to them, using the same approach: use 3-6 figures, all the same painting style/colors, to see what each wash technique will do.Use a fine pointy 00 size brush to apply more refined pin-washes where you fou feel they might be necessary such as in weld seams and around bolts and rivets. Model Wash has been formulated with a modified acrylic resin so that the superficial tension is similar to that of the traditional solvent-based washes, but with the advantage of working with a water-based medium.

Also, if anyone has any tips or things I should know as a beginner in this hobby, feel free to let me know! People have also used rubbing alcohol in place of water for the mixture so that it dries much faster, though this does put you on a timer for application. If it’s a glossy/slick finish, I would give it a sanding to rough up the surface before applying the wash.Starting off on the right foot It might seem like common sense, but it pays off to start out the right way. If you want to experiment without using expensive mini's, get some plastic Army Men figures: block paint those parts which vary from the plastic's color (no need to paint more than is necessary, as you are testing the shading/washing, not your painting); after it dries for at least 30 minutes (acrylic paints take around 15 minutes, but 30 is safer), apply the wash of your choice. From there all you need to do is pat dry it with paper towels (rubbing it dry will cause streaks) and repeat until you get the dirtied effect you want. Since Joel sounded pretty confident and sent me the inks for free, I knew I had to test them out and come up with a honest observation.
