About this deal

Shake the can for a minute and spray a light coat over just the areas of the dash that have undercoating. The first step is to clean the surface with 1000 Super Clean plastic cleaner to remove any silicone dressings that may have been applied. If a batch is mixed in the proper proportion, you should have about 2 mins working time to spread it over the plastic welds. Unless otherwise noted, only one of each item is required for this DIY, but you may need more of a specific product depending on how many cracks and holes you are trying to repair in your dash. TOP TIP: To match the leather in the Porsche, we used 4 mini packs of sugru (1 x Orange + 1 x Green + 1 x Black + 1 x White) However, you really only need a very small amount of each.

You will even notice a difference in the spray tips they use; they rarely clog and consistently put out a uniform spray. The next best option is create your own texture that fully covers the dash using an undercoating spray. ignore the screw, I took this picture after I incorrectly secured the left piece first) Notice that the right piece tucks into the left piece. Form the surgu into a small cone and hold the thinner end with your thumb and index finger while pressing it into the surface.TIP: While colour mixing and working sugru in your fingers, sugru will get warm and this makes it more sticky. Using a Dremel tool with a drum sander, or a rotary sander, sand back the puckered vinyl cover until the cover is fairly flat.

Gently roll the stamp on the filled in holes, applying gentle pressure, enough to make an impression without squashing the sugru out of place. It is more expensive than many other aerosol spray paints/under-coatings, but you’re paying for the high quality of their products.Ultimately, you want to build-up a texture that is uniform and smooth across the entire dash surface that will fully conceal the filler and weld repairs. Testing your repair is as simple as placing the dash in direct sunlight for 30 mins and if possible, exposing it to colder temperatures at night.

I have tested many different products and techniques (spending quite a bit of money along the way to fully experiment) to repair this specific type of dash, which is constructed of polyurethane foam, hard plastic and vinyl. Open the can of Padded Dash Filler and use a 2” putty knife to scoop out half a golf ball size of the product onto a piece of cardboard. I chose to repair the donor dash because it was in much worse shape and I wanted to experiment with the restoration process on one that would be more challenging. The dash itself is originally a plastic type of material over a thin layer of foam which gives a bit of push.

This SEM product comes with a longer spray nozzle tip that helps to diffuse the product more evenly than the regular spray nozzle. So to make your car seem as good as new then you will need to match the colours so that no one will notice your repair. This drawing shows a cross section of the damaged dash with the split vinyl curling up and the cratered out foam underneath. Work the heating iron slowly down the welding stick so that you melt a little at a time until you reach the end of the groove. Both components have to be mixed together in the ratio prescribed in the instructions and spread over the area you are repairing.
