About this deal

When classmates (but not mate-mates) Hallie, Angelo, Gustav and Naira are forced to come to school on a SATURDAY, they think things can’t get much worse. Sign up to hear about the latest books, brilliant competitions, fun activities, brand new resources for teachers and events happening near you as well as the latest World Book Day news and how you can celebrate reading all year round. Panic then sets in when the detention supervisor is dragged underground by something… you may be able to guess what from the clues but who and why is Angelo being targeted?

They know each other by name, reputation or being in classes together at primary school, but have barely spoken to each other in years. Some plot holes do that, because the story they’re in isn’t good enough to make you not mind it, but for some stories, like this one, you’re willing to suspend your disbelief just that little bit further. They are having detention on this Saturday, you know, a few hours of doing stuff because of things they did. Having no choice but to work together to try and stop all this but could there be a reason why this is all happening and why Hallie, Angelo, Gustav and Naira have been made to have detention. Cliff hanger chapters, twists and turns, this is not for the feint hearted but it’s a thrill of a ride ( written for 9-12 year olds) A spooky horror story but full of friendships, secrets and the lesson that honesty may be hard but it helps us work together.

I love the animals (the pigs especially), though we all know what happens to animals in horror, right? When classmates Angelo, Hallie, Gustav and Naira are forced to come to school on a Saturday, they already think it's the worst day ever. I’m sure I’ve already mentioned that I love school settings, and this one was very different with the horror vibes, but it was still so fascinating. As it turns out, they all have personal struggles and it actually bonds them together as they learn more about each other.I ended the book really loving all four of them, and I can’t wait to read more of the series to see more of their character arcs. She regularly visits schools and festivals, and her books have three times been selected for The Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge. Four classmates have all received a Saturday detention, they aren't friends but each has accepted their fate of spending their Saturday together with the eager and eccentric teacher Mr Canton, who is eager to get them to work together to get back on track!

I guessed correctly with one part of the storyline but it wasn't until other events happened that I figured things out. There’s also a light touch as it handles child poverty, bullying and disability, and I really liked the way that our main characters acknowledged and tried to make amends for their mistakes. I loved that this story shows both poverty and disability in a realistic light, as well as family expectations. The pacing of this story was perfect so that it kept me on my toes and although the story wasn’t particularly realistic it made sense.

The characters are really in-depth and when reading I got to know them and I could sympathise for them. I didn’t notice this, which meant that I had a very creepy surprise when I realised that the kids were facing off against giant spiders.

It’s lightened with lots of sparkling dialogue between the kids, the kind of authentic banter that Jennifer Killick excels at. Cut off from help and in danger each time they touch the ground, the gang’s only hope is to work together. Dread Wood is what happens when a middle-grade version of The Breakfast Club meets a Goosebumps book. It meant that I got to enjoy reading their friendships build and them learning each others strengths under… extremely creepy stress.
