Just finished this book (ik it’s more magical realism than fantasy) and it was a very middle of the road book for me, didn’t love it but didn’t hate it either. and taller than expected – and lavender firelds near my favorite hotel in the world in Avignon,) all sweet to remember…. Anise hyssop honey butter on toast, angelica candy, and cupcakes with crystallized pansies made children thoughtful. Sydney decides to find another way to make a living and rents a chair at a local salon to make use of skills she learned when she attended cosmetology school.There is no happily ever after on that front, but there is a small shift in one of the characters, Emma, which feels consistent with Emma’s history with Sydney. It’s present without being too much, it works but not all the time, and it’s a subtle thing, a perspective shift, rather than a spell that makes people do things. Claire is a Waverly, which means she tends to a garden and knows its secrets — what the plants can do to a person — and how to use them.

The novel tells the story of Claire Waverly, a chef and owner of her own catering company in Bascom, North Carolina. Evanelle arrives early and reveals to Claire and Sydney that their mother ate an apple from their tree many years earlier, and most likely saw the car accident in which she was to die.

There is a family of women who are all "great at sex" and has a mother guiding her daughter to use that "skill" to manipulate a boy into dating/marrying her.

A minute later she came back in and handed him the paper bag with a bottle of rose geranium wine in it. It's refreshing to find a Southern novel that doesn't depend on folksy humor or stereotypes but instead on the imaginative use of magical realism. Half the town wants to get to the tree and eat an apple, but Claire buries every apple as it falls to prevent people from seeing bad things.Afraid of getting closer to Tyler, Claire starts bringing him homemade casseroles with ingredients meant to dispel Tyler’s interest in her. yup, better, i’m thinking a new camera or software… (even though in truth I’m not a lavender brread fan, though I’ve eaten more than once as, well, it does tend to be .
