The children then re-wrote the story, keeping some things the same and making other elements their own.But Mr Grinling isn't the only one who enjoys the tasty food, so Mrs Grinling has to think of a way to stop the greedy seagulls from stealing the lighthouse keeper's lunch. Its is decided that Hamish, the Grinlings’ cat, will accompany the lunch, but he becomes seasick and the seagulls, unthreatened by him, still have a feast. When seagulls start stealing the food, the couple must work together to find a way to sabotage them. The bold and colourful illustrations take me right back to my childhood, and will put a smile on any child's face.

At night time he lived in a small white cottage perched high on the cliffs, and in the daytime he rowed out to his lighthouse to clean and polish the light. There are so many cross- curricular ideas to explore with this book such as vocabulary building, problem solving, healthy eating, the seaside etc.Observant children may also ask why Mr Grinling doesn't simply bring his lunch with him to work the way they may bring a packed lunch to school! Hamish, the lighthouse keeper's cat, has been neglecting his duties and the mice are running wild all over the lighthouse. I have made class books and wall displays and children have also written letters to Mr Grinling to suggest solutions to his problems.
