About this deal

There’s one other very important factor in loft boarding, something you might not be aware of as a potential issue. Once condensation has built up, it can soak into the ceiling below your loft, as well as into your wooden joists, causing them to lose structural integrity. This is one of the most important steps, and it’s one that’s tripped up a lot of homeowners in the past. The lights were also fitted by an electrician before I started the work as without decent light it would have been a much harder job. All of the East Midlands including Derby, Burton on Trent, Uttoxeter, Ashbourne, Swadlincote, Woodville, Ashby De La Zouch, Hilton, Long Eaton, Melbourne, Ilkeston, Heanor, Loughborough, Kegworth, Coalville, Castle Donington, Shardlow, Willington, Rolleston on Dove.

Standard – The standard approach will see someone put loft boards straight onto joists in your loft, fixing them flat across the floor even if it means squashing insulation material down. A year ago we used Loftzone items to board out a raised platform above the insulation in our new-build loft. It's a brilliant way to create a clean, usable space out of something that was filthy and dangerous.

Loft boards generally have a tongue and groove construction which allows them to neatly slot together. I've been looking for some loft shelving for a while, so when I saw the new loftzone products I thought I'd give them a go. Once I'd got everything up in the loft and read the short instructions the first 3 beams and shelf was up in less than 10 mins.By using a loft leg this will raise the flooring above any insulating materials you have in between the joists, this space is essential to ensuring the insulating properties have room to breathe so they will be working to their best ability. Recycled plastic leg used to raise the storage platform in a loft to prevent compression of insulation. But be careful with quotes that seem too good to be true, as a company may not be using quality materials. A subframe is created perpendicular to your joists, leaving room over the top of your insulation material and allowing for boards to be placed on the top. As a novice DIYer I was apprehensive about converting the loft by myself but I was amazed how simple it was!

The quality of the materials provided also appears to be very high, and I have plenty of confidence in the resulting raised floor. All in all a very positive experience from this seller who I have now used twice and will be recommending to others. There are a number of specific products on the market that aim to solve the above problems by safely raising loft boards above mineral wool/quilt based insulation cost effectively and without creating thermal bridging or adding excessive weight.Upgrading your insulation from 75mm to 250mm thick could reduce your heating bills by around 35- 75 per year depending on the size of the property. You’ll need to take a quick trip up to the loft to fully measure up the area you intend to board out. The second is using 175mm or 300mm Loft Leg insulation spacers, which sit on top of your ceiling joists.

I just cut a piece of 2x1 batten to the correct tri-support spacing to save me using the tape everytime.

We went into full details in a previous post about loft insulation, but in short: squashing it down can reduce its effectiveness by up to 50%, which translates into significant losses for you in terms of heating bills and wasted energy. It took a little while to lay the first few boards but after I got the hang of it I was able to lay a board every 10minutes and completed a large section of the loft within the day. Some manufacturers will offer a direct repair or replacement service (as applicable) which will often resolve your problem more quickly. Therefore, boarding directly onto joists would mean in many cases having reduced insulation in between the joists (75mm – 100mm) or squashing insulation down where there is boarding from 270mm to 100mm.
