About this deal

Help students understand that the pursuit of excellence does not mean that anything short of perfection is failure; learn to feel good about genuine accomplishment. When students tell me that they started or strengthened a non-profit venture, started volunteering, or became more engaged in a social movement because of what or how I taught, it feels really good. Designing curriculum in ‘the new normal’ The new school year will present many new challenges, including how to adapt your curricula to meet pupils’ needs.

This can be encouraged by something as simple as framing your language to use pronouns such as we and us instead of I or you. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. And I absolutely love Peps’ take on motivation, that it determines what our students pay attention to, and hence what they are likely to remember and learn, thus beautifully complementing Dan Williangham’s insight that memory is the residue of thought. We struggled to include relevant pieces of scripture in our answer, so we are going to look at 5 pieces of scripture and consider how they may link to topics we have studied’.

Students find it satisfying to reason through a problem and discover the underlying principle on their own. The reason we don’t yet have a sufficiently strong and stable influence on motivation is because we don’t yet have a sufficiently common and coherent understanding of what it is or how it works. We recognise motivation’s centrality to our core purpose but we don’t all truly understand how to go about it. When children feel proficient in something, they develop a greater sense of agency, and are therefore more curious about the next aspect of their learning.

In educational contexts, students feel autonomous when they are given options, within a structure, about how to perform or present their work. Each chapter focuses on a main thought that is dissected and explained with clarity followed by a summary sentence to take away, with all the key messages listed at the end together with suggestions for further reading.

To make instruction responsive to the power motive, provide opportunities for responsibility, authority, and interpersonal influence. At the end of this review, I am presenting my own plans to improve the motivation of my students at writing better sentences (see below). And, of course, the energy, connection, and dynamics of the classroom or lecture hall is inimitable. First, I became an English professor because of a life-long love of reading, and my belief in the intellectual and aesthetic value of literature motivates all of the work I do in the classroom (and much of what I do outside of work as well). In our current situation, schools have been concentrating on norms like mask-wearing and hand-washing, but we are finding it hard to have effective 'normative messaging' for so much else, due to restrictions on large gatherings and difficulties in communication]. Also consider holding “open-door” meetings, where every teacher has the option to attend and listen during meetings, even if they are not directly involved.

It is presented in an attractive format with easy to follow chapters and key ideas summarised at regular intervals to maintain your focus and importantly, it is full of practical ideas that we can use in our classrooms. Universal provision includes a child’s learning environment, as well as the high-quality teaching available to them. Kathryn Morgan has collated 115 links to each of the further reading suggestions in Motivated Teaching. The book ends with a brilliant chapter on how we can apply these principles to ourselves, something that many educational books fail to do.

It’s a small gesture, but when I’ve done it, I think that it demonstrates to students that we are all human, we all make mistakes and it can be overcome.
