About this deal

This special hardcover edition of Sally Rooney’s modern classic has been specially designed for Faber Members.

When the TV show came out I was elated, but I feared that it wouldn't adapt very well because so much of the book is spent in Marianne and Connell's heads. Remarkably precise—she captures meticulously the way a generation raised on social data thinks and talks . She was the editor of the Stinging Fly in 2018 and a Cullman Center Fellow at the New York Public Library from 2019–20. With over 6 million of the world’s best eBooks to choose from, Kobo offers you a whole world of reading. She was nominated for an Emmy for her work on the television adaptation of Normal People, which was broadcast on CBC Gem in 2020.

Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in the west of Ireland, but the similarities end there. Some people say that's what true love is, loving someone despite (and indeed because of) their flaws and insecurities, despite the fact that they drive you up the bend. With an introduction by director Lenny Abrahamson and featuring iconic images from the show, this book contains the complete screenplays of the acclaimed Emmy-nominated television drama based on Sally Rooney’s bestselling novel. Two stars because I found the narrative/dialogue worthwhile but that is of course that is all from the novel. Home to William Golding, Sylvia Plath, Kazuo Ishiguro, Sally Rooney, Tsitsi Dangarembga, Max Porter, Ingrid Persaud, Anna Burns and Rachel Cusk, among many others, Faber is proud to publish some of the greatest novelists from the early twentieth century to today.

Adaptation is very interesting to me and this is a great example of when it is not done well - the adaptation of a work of art has no life or creative spirit of its own, it just takes the source material and converts it into another form, without any admirable intentions, with actually maybe the least admirable intention in mind - to take the source material and convert it into something more easily consumable. Centred around the inner lives of Marianne and Connell, Rooney charts their entry into adult life as they learn about intimacy, forgiveness and self-belief against a backdrop of shifting social spheres. Absolutely engrossing and surprisingly heart-breaking with more depth, subtlety, and insight than any one novel deserves. So lazy and dispassionate, very clearly churned out for the shoot, completely technical rather than a labour of love, without any kind of cinematic vision or aspirations. Her second feature will be an adaptation of the Graham Swift novel Mothering Sunday for Number 9 Films and Film4. The complete screenplays of the acclaimed Emmy-nominated drama based on Sally Rooney's bestselling novel. I find both of the actors to be well-cast and hot, and that's the nicest thing I have to say about it.

Sally Rooney is the author of the novels Conversations with Friends, Normal People and Beautiful World, Where Are You.
