About this deal

While this does nothing from an effectiveness point of view it does give the Big Shuriken 3 a ‘complete’ or elegantly finished look that the Big Shuriken 2 generation did lack. One, if the fan is supposed to be 1800 RPM and it only turns at 1600 RPM, there is a prominent issue glaring at us there. Here we can see the heatpipes making a perfect seal with the base as well as the generous hunk of aluminum that sits just above it.

Warranty information is printed on the left side and on the right, we see a few words about both the heatsink and the Kaze Flex Slim 120 PWM fan used. The pre-installed 120 mm fan with RGB lighting has a height of only 15 millimeters and can optionally be exchanged for a 25 mm high fan for a performance upgrade. whereas the latter was possible by shifting the base plate to the right and by using a new asymmetrical design for its fins.

As always our first concern is ambient temperatures so once again we keep the room temperature to around 21-23 degrees (not really hard but unfortunately not 100% accurate as in our lab) and as always to successfully record the load temperatures we use the latest OCCT application (for around 6-10 minutes) to push the processor to its limits so we can record its temperatures. This has been done so that even on the tightest board RAM height should not be a problem… as the back will actually be facing toward the DIMMS. I am regularly seeing temperatures around 60C for normal operation and occasionally it will bump up to 81-82 under a load. Scythe has always done well to attract attention to their packaging, and with the Big Shuriken 3, this has not changed.

All intake of fresh air is collected through the underside of this chassis as the side panel is not ventilated. The copper base is machined into a slightly convex shape, and while most of the surface has an orange peel effect from the later plating of the surface, at the center, there is a defined ring left from the machining process. The Big Shuriken 3 sits in a thin layer of form-fitting cardboard at the box (so as to keep it from moving too much while transit) and the small accessories box sits on top of the Big Shuriken 3. It’s worth noting that Scythe included mounting screws for both standard 25 mm thick fans and the included 17 mm thick Kaze Flex fan. Scythe remains a household name in the air cooling segment of PC hardware due to its well-received heatsinks and fans over the years.
