It has the same claustrophobic, flat and disenchanted feel as Du Maurier's Rebecca - which perhaps sounds like I'm not really trying to sell the experience of this book but I absolutely am. And one of the great strengths of the book is its refusal to offer up too patterned or neat a narrative. There is wider value to retain staff and the proximity to Whitehall to continue the Institution’s ability to advise on and influence policy. My father was the eldest of twelve, and this extended family has no doubt had a strong influence on my life, as have my own children.

Barry Unsworth, whose Sacred Hunger shared the 1992 Booker prize with Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient, mistrusted an addiction to historical minutiae when it came to evoking the past in fiction. There are lots of 'issues' here (social equality, relations between men and women, marriage, love, violence, capitalism) but they feel natural and unforced, an intricate part of the story being told rather than hijacking the tale. She was part of the cast of Outnumbered and recently appeared in BBC TVs My Mother and Other Strangers. While this structure no longer exists, the steps remain, reminding travelers or better or worse of the old sport.

Skeptics who frown on this urban legend claim the street was actually named after an old pub located there. Diner, with his customary shrewdness, foresees how events in France will create upheaval across Europe and threaten war. The novel opens (after a brief and superfluous modern day prelude) with a man burying a dead body in a clearing in a wood, a blend of beauty and horror evoked with such breathtaking poetry that it haunts me still. The street is named after the Royal Menagerie and Aviary which were located there in the reign of King James I.The subplot is that of the French revolution, as perceived by random reports that make it in, whether by post or by newspapers, and how differently they are perceived by John Diner and by Augustus and his milieu. And there is the romantic poet, Will Forrest, who is wonderfully drawn, although he seems to have strolled into the story by accident. This experience of working in many different countries and cultures has been very important to my work. This to me is the main interest in the book along with the lovely relationships between Lizzie, her mother, Thomas, Hannah and Philo.
