About this deal

One thing is true: the UK owes African American descendants of enslaved people reparations as surely as the US government does. My classes did not get into that, either: purposefully or not, they gave the impression that the transatlantic slave trade stopped just because Great Britain said so. Certain themes recur in this reading list: “us” versus “them” thinking that fuels stereotypical humor; humor’s ability to make hatred pleasurable (and even attractive); humor as a mechanism for race-based solidarity; and most significantly, humor as a mechanism through which violence is reduced to a laughing matter.

During the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, the Royal Navy employed several hired armed cutters that bore the name Black Joke. If a suspected slaver could make a credible claim to belong to a nation, or deceive the authorities about the nature of its cargo, it could try to claim exemption from the WAS’s jurisdiction. Legislation to stop the trafficking of slaves came into being in 1807 but how does one plug all the routes that existed in the Atlantic between Africa and the Americas? Ramsey received promotion to the rank of commander for the capture of Marinerito and handed over command to Lieutenant H V Huntley. His detailing of the inclusion and exclusion imperatives of the jokes can be especially helpful to scholars doing rhetorical analysis of media texts—even outside of humor. From 1808, the WAS made attempts to intercept illegal slave ships, but with few vessels available for patrols during the Napoleonic Wars success was extremely modest. Rooks' dynamic narrative expertly uncovers and examines the high stakes and political intricacies of Britain’s attempt to abolish the global slave trade . The descriptions of the conditions aboard the slaving vessels from the logs of the Navy crew did drive home how horrible conditions were aboard the ships. The admiralty put Dos Amigos up for auction, where the commodore of the British Anti-Slavery Squadron, Jonathan Hayes, bought her and named her Fair Rosamond. The Slaving Brig Henriqueta and her Evil Sisters: A Case Study in the 19th-Century Slave Trade to Brazil". I looked at several kits to try and modify including the Occre kit Dos Amigos (Which the Black Joke actually captured! As the government’s national archive for England, Wales and the United Kingdom, The National Archives hold over 1,000 years of the nation’s records for everyone to discover and use. The Gertrudis was taken in January 1828 after a 24-hour chase and secured the release of 155 enslaved people, 80 of whom were children.
