About this deal

The beating heart of Arles is the centrally located Place du Forum, not far from the city’s famous ampitheater. The sort of vegetarian who, when we were out, would finish my hamburgers and slices of pepperoni pizza because it was “better than wasting”.

Little green shoots popped out of the surface in impossibly long rows that had a bizarrely soothing effect. After four weeks, the water is slowly drained and the floating rice plants sink to the floor and grow roots. I recently discovered Camarge red rice at the supermarket: It looks like grains of long-grain black rice merged with brown basmati rice, and turned a deep russet red. Today, 75% of France’s entire rice production comes from the Camargue, 55% of it from the district of Arles. It can be used as an alternative to white rice, and is commonly used as a side staple ingredient (as an alternative to potatoes). To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. It may not be reproduced in any way whatsoever without the prior consent of Waitrose Limited nor without due acknowledgement. While we have taken care in preparing this summary and believe it is accurate, it is not a substitute for your reading the product packaging and label prior to use.

This aromatic grain is named after the Camargue region in France and is known for its deep red colour and nutty, slightly earthy flavour. Stir the onions, almonds, apricot, mint, rocket, lemon juice and the remaining olive oil through the cooked rice. In fact I was in such a high state of admiration I even got excited about watching a smallish black bird swoop down close to where I was standing to peck at the ground…. Not suitable for peanut, nut, milk, gluten, sesame and soya allergy sufferers due to manufacturing methods. But the Camargue is also one of the oldest rice-growing areas in Europe; rice has been cultivated here since the 16th century. This week I ventured forth into the depths of the Camargue, a beautiful unique landscape and quite different to anything I had seen before.

In our five years together, I saw first-hand how thoroughly vegans and vegetarians are treated as a fussy nuisance or an afterthought at holiday gatherings. We’ve helped you locate this recipe but for the full instructions you need to go to its original source. When the rice has been cooked and drained, add it to the pan with the onion mixture and cook over medium heat until everything is warm and the flavors have come together, 2-3 minutes. Subscribe to my monthly newsletter where I’ll be sharing all this along with some amazing kitchen tips and tricks, my latest foodie finds and news. Originating from the wetlands of southern France, Camargue rice has an intense, nutty flavour and a chewy texture that adds that little something extra to your cooking. It adds a unique and flavorful twist to any recipe, making it the perfect ingredient to elevate your meals. Job nearly done here, I realise I have been so absorbed in lapping up the seasons fresh produce I have completely forgotten to visit one of my favourite chocolate makers Joel Durad in Saint Remy…oh well maybe next time.
