Description

Within Douglas Laing's esteemed Old Particular range emerges a treasured expression – a limited, single-cask offering of Single Malt Scotch whisky. I know that that CI uses the same peated barley as Lagavulin 12 (from Port Ellen), and if I hadn't finished my bottle of CI 12 last night, I would be able to compare. Wonderfully balanced with all the requisite Islay components, only presented brightly and cleanly, not brooding and heavy.

We’re also getting a touch more ethanol when adding water, some ginger, dried grape must, candied pecans, a hint of chlorine and cloves. Further, deliberate or undeliberate manipulation of information on the Service (such as ratings), any activity with the intent to influence such information, value or reviews on products (e. Nose: Peat smoke, but a softer, less insistent peat smoke, less medicinal and strong than Ardbeg or Laphroig. Thanks to its strong taste, Caol Ila 12 years is best suited for peaty whisky lovers who prefer a multi-layered single malt.

The peat is light for an Islay and is accompanied by a very distinctive oily mouth feel, although this malt is not as oily as the 18 year old. For me this is an all time high too, ahead of Auchentoshan Three Wood and the Balvenie Doublewood and about 20 other that I have tasted. My friend happens to live with a backyard that opens out onto a lovely stretch of woods and fields with a creek meandering through one side. The aftertaste immediately leaves a bit of bittnerness in your mouth, but after a few minutes there is a lingering taste of meat and some leather.

As it sits you also get notes of pickles, peaches, pears as well as medicinal notes and bonfire smoke. The distillery is located near Port Askaig at the North of Islay, overlooking the cove and the Paps of southern Jura. Softer on the peat smoke than a Laphroaig or Ardbeg, this expression is one our our go-to Islay single malts. Some malts also use water from a peated source, but do not burn peat to generate smoke to dry the barley-malt.Peat' separate from smoke is an experience of the decaying earthy vegetative matter which is peat, without the simultaneous smell and taste of smokiness, as from the burning of that peat. The peat and smoke is stronger in the taste than in the aroma, and the finishing is just perfect for my taste. The _ga cookie, installed by Google Analytics, calculates visitor, session and campaign data and also keeps track of site usage for the site's analytics report. But then again, Caol Ila 12YO does give you pretty heavy peppery smoke and peat along the way, behind its subtle cover.

Blend: If you already have a bottle of Talisker in your collection, try different mixes with the Caol Ila. Root vegetables, freshly picked from the garden, wet and freshly washed with a bit of soil still on them. Even very smokey whiskies like most Laphroaigs will show a very large decrease in smokiness within a few weeks of opening a new bottle. The Caol Ila 12 is an entry level malt, i believe it was one of Diageo's classic malts for a time before being replaced by Lagavulin. Honestly, I can,t shake off the image of a nice fall horseback ride through an apple orchard, with nearby leave piles being burned. The intensity is similar to some other Islay scotches, like Laphroaig or Ardbeg, but this one hits you with a hugely smoky taste, rather than that of peat or medicine. The nose starts out all wood smoke, but if you hang around long enough there is a quick acid bite followed by a sweetness, like biting into a mandarin orange. The distillery was founded in 1846 and is situated on the shores of the Sound, a spot originally chosen partly because of the clean water from Loch Nam Ban which still provides its main supply.
