A Onda, Эксперимент 2: Волна, 恶魔教室, La ola, Náš vůdce, Nas vudce, The Wave ウェイヴ, Το Κύμα, La Vague, The. The narrative style doesn't keep the audience at distance, so that it can reflect on the things that happened, but rather lets them experience the occurrences; so the plot is narrated linearly. Although this is a German flick, I was taken aback when I learned it is based on a true story that took place in California! The mentally unstable and unaccepted character is a good metaphor for the state of the German people after world war one, and his acceptance of the Wave is reminiscent of the German people accepting the nazis.

However, the experiment quickly grows out of control and develops into an exclusive cult - 'the wave' - with its own uniform and salute. Director Dennis Gansel managed to churn out a movie that was watchable and definitely had some interesting political and social aspects to it, some that definitely leaves you with something to think about. He noted that although the ending deviates from what happened, its depiction of a "what-if" scenario for the Wave getting out of the teacher's control was closer to what he felt would happen to a true fascist movement even if its leader renounced it. This appears to be the case here, with standard (in fact clichéd) genre staples such as the girl alone in the corridors of a deserted school who is plunged into darkness when the lights are mysteriously extinguished (we never find out the culprit) inserted purely to add an element of tension that merely yanks the viewer from what is otherwise an absorbing and reasonably intelligent study of the power of the fascist mindset and its' emergence from noble ideals.Yes, I can see the character of Wegner being very likeable, and the students seem to like him as a teacher.

But, the children soon eat their words when they become members of a much less disturbing, yet frighteningly similar clique. I have always been very interested in this subject: The question of whether fascism could happen again, how the fascist system works, how people can be led astray. Director Dennis Gansel seems to like movies about the power of groups and how they affect the individual. The way the different children reacted and how such a seemingly innocent experiment profoundly affected their lives was incredible and horrifying.

A water polo competition is due to happen later that day, and Wenger asks the Wave to show up in support of the team. There is fast, even rapid camera work and the rock music, that accompanies many of the scenes, is often characterized as impulsive. In my opinion, the most realistic opposer would be an outsider who remains an outsider just because he feels unwell in groups. Vogel gives a powerful performance as an idealistic teacher who isn't aware of the influence he has on others.

Gansel himself had felt an oversaturation during his schooldays and had developed an emotional connection to this chapter of German history only after watching the film Schindler's List. The members of The Wave begin spray-painting their logo around town at night, having parties where only Wave members are allowed to attend, and ostracizing and tormenting anyone not in their group. At one time the German cinema was sometimes accused of failing to take a hard enough look at the country's Nazi past. Please consider upgrading to a Pro account—for less than a couple bucks a month, you’ll get cool additional features like all-time and annual stats pages ( example), the ability to select (and filter by) your favorite streaming services, and no ads!The appeal of The Wave, and by extension that of all populist-authoritarian movements, is that they provide a sense of unity, of belonging, of purpose. Die welle" should be seen as a cautionary tale by serious minded individuals thanks to the inspired film by Dennis Gansel. Within a few days, what began with harmless notions like discipline and community builds into a real movement: THE WAVE. a b Tobias Kniebe: Der Faschist in uns Archived 26 November 2009 at the Wayback Machine In: Süddeutsche Zeitung, 12.

This is the type of over-achieving person who engages in all kind of projects, plans ahead for the future and does everything to succeed in life. The screenplay moves the experiment, which was carried out in California in the 1960s, to present day Germany. According to the lack of depth in their motives and emotions, they seem to be distanced, the critics argued further, especially Karo's transformation from the enthusiastic participant to the aggressive opponent is not comprehensible.Wenger finally asks Tim to leave his house, only to find the next morning that Tim had slept outside on his doorstep. I had some problems with his previous outing "Napola" (wrote a review on IMDb), but in "Die Welle" he gets most things right.
