We use Klassman for blocking and the WRO has not performed well for us in this form, we have used the Klassman blocking compost for modules and potting as well and it seems to still outperform the others which claim to be purpose made for different applications. Yet again we are having serious propagation problems with ‘organic quality’ organic seed and potting composts. It is difficult to get the watering right with coir and the choice of module tray can be important – some trays don’t drain as much and I think were waterlogged.

a complete lifecycle analysis compared to other products shows it is not so bad as we like to think and horticulture only accounts for a very small percentage of total use, and coir is not a fully ideal substitue on its own as we are finding out. If you’re looking for organic, peat-free garden compost delivered throughout the UK, you’re in the right place. This is a breeding ground for rot fungi and bacteria to occur, hence the reason why many of the problems you are experiencing. I was chuffed with these dahlias sown in SylvaGrow with Added John Innes, which recently bagged a Which?

Klassman always has better or, at worse, the same performance as FF and WRO and the WRO module has been generally good, certainly better than FF, but does have the weed problem with particularly rushes/reeds germinating after about 3 weeks. I've not yet taken the plunge into peat-free compost (yes, I know I should but fear risking my plants). I have had problems with Fertile Fibre this year very bad germination and it killed all of the cucumbers,I complained and was sent a replacement pallet, this was worse if anything, killed the rest of the cucumbers, although I was promised it would be fine, complained again and was offered another free pallet, but declined and now have bought a pallet of West Riding Module, this is better but we are short of transplants of barasicas, lettuce and beets as the first few batches didn’t grow, and I wasn’t sure what the problem was,I have used Fertile Fibre in the past and its been fine for most things and I found it particularly good for cucumbers, thats when I realised I had a big problem with it. I finally gave up, dug up my tomatoes and re-planted them in some home-made compost (I persuaded Mr DS to turn the heap). Here’s Some Real Gardening News: Peat-free Composts – Fertile Fibre and SylvaGrow – Bag Two Out of Three Which?Personally I question why any use of peat at all is considered such a no no (despite the fact that I think it was me that wrote the first article in New Farmer and Grower questioning its use back in the day! SylvaGrow is a professional-grade peat-free compost (a mix of composted bark, coir and wood fibre) which has been proven in use over many decades by some of the UK’s top commercial plant growers. It must be really disheartening for all you growers to experience all these problems with peat free composts. There seems to be still some debate continuing as to what’s going to happen from January 2024 and plenty of confusion. There are also mixes containing Akadamia, which I use for my Bonsai activities, but it’s heavy and extremely expensive.
