I applied this new mix to all areas that were this colour or darker, while holding off from applying it to any areas that were lighter in tone. Unlike thin posters and paper prints, Giclée canvas artwork offers the texture, look and feel of fine-art paintings.

This open edition print of my original watercolour painting is printed with archival non-fade inks on quality heavy 250gsm paper. I began with the black areas, using the same combination of Payne’s Gray and Burnt Sienna as before, only much thicker this time. I painted the frog’s skin using the size 3 brush and the brighter Winsor Green (Yellow Shade) with lots of water and a little Winsor Lemon. This artwork is crafted in the United Kingdom with artist-grade canvas, professionally hand-stretched, and stapled over pine-wood bars in gallery wrap style; a method artists use to present artwork in galleries.I began this painting of a tree frog with pale, watery mixes of watercolour which were a match to the lightest tonal values within each colour.

This is my oldest collection so far, I started it when I was a teenager and haven’t stopped painting art that fits into it since! I painted the purples I could see in the leg using Quinacridone Purple with a touch of Scarlet Lake. To make the painting process as easy as possible, the drawing needed to be a ‘contour’ drawing, mapping out the outside edges of the frog and bamboo but also any clear edges to shapes of colour within the frog and bamboo. With the previous layer dry, I used the darkest orange tones and midtone orange mixes again to make tonal adjustments.

However, I chose to paint the oranges next instead so that I didn’t run the risk of having the black bleed into the orange as I applied that around it in the eye. This is crucial because we perceive colours relative to the colours near them, so as we layer and darken one colour, it affects how those near to it look.
