About this deal
For some reason it’s even more compelling if said woman has absolutely no idea who said rock star is. Samantha Miller is an influencer, she tells her adoring fans how to live their lives and has three million followers. She has everything she could ever want- money, fame, a huge following of young women who are obsessed with her every word- but she can't let go of the past. Then there’s the Sam her followers see but then there is the Sam from the past where other characters have an entirely different perception of the truth.
It goes without saying that the impact of social media today is massive, and ‘Idol’ merely reinforces my dislike for it! With everything at stake, what will happen and what will become of Samantha and whose account is the truth or is there more than one truth? Louise's first novel for adults, Almost Love , was published in 2018, followed shortly by The Surface Breaks , her feminist re-imagining of The Little Mermaid . Samantha remembers it as a positive experience, but the other woman, Lisa, remembers it very differently.Louise says, ‘I have been inside this community for the best part of two decades, but there were things I noted during the pandemic that got me thinking. It's a book that dazzles and mesmerises, and will linger in your thoughts long after you finish reading.
Flawed, manipulative, caught up in herself and the version of her she presents to the world, but O'Neill has created a messy character that I couldn't tear myself away from. I really enjoyed this, Samantha is a horrible character (in fact they all are) but I loved reading about her. They were something more than friends, more than sisters even; they were two halves of the same person, only whole when they were together.
