About this deal
the mixes I have done on them seem to translate really well, they give me a really solid and reliable reference that I find to be invaluable. The lower-treble tuning is mostly neutral, while it is sparkly post 10kHz with good air and extension up top. of systems in the world won’t be able to play it back, and I don’t think ANY of my audience will be able to hear it.
Even though the weight is fairly well distributed by the suspension strap and ear pad design, it could still be problematic, especially if you like using headphones for long durations. If you boost the response by 10 dB, you only travel from blue curve to red which is almost no difference! After consulting many producers and mix engineers using LCD range headphones, we realised that the majority kept them in the studio, where they were used with the single ended (quarter inch jack) cable. Among the benefits that are claimed for the planar magnetic design are that they present an easy load for headphone amps, and that they have a much lower level of distortion than you’d find in a typical moving-coil headphone.
Most of the time though, I think they’re even with the bass and treble — my lizard brain, expecting vocals to be forward, is caught off-guard by this.
region, which not only makes for stronger, more forward instrument definition but also makes it a much brighter sounding headphone in comparison too. Because the electrostatic diaphragm is not burdened by the mass of the voice coil, it can be thinner, less stiff and more responsive to transients; and because it is driven evenly over its entire surface rather than from the central ring where the coil is attached, it is less prone to distortion. Additionally, the newest version is tuned differently, and it’s meant to eliminate the flaws of the original LCD-X, its uneven midrange performance. The LCD-Xs are simply the best-sounding headphones I have ever heard, with incredible musical dynamics and a remarkably neutral frequency response. The EL8s have an impressively neutral tonality, detailed yet not exaggerated presentation of transients, and a rewarding sense of musical dynamics. These are not basshead headphones and the impact on the intro kick drums has a weird level of reverb – it sounds pretty unnatural. When different technologies compete to fulfil the same market niche, it’s not always the best one that wins.
