About this deal

I didn’t find it that easy to work with, but that's inherent in the material - it's not quite as sticky as most glues, but same consistency, and tends to stick to tools or hands. Fernox LS-X External Leak Sealer is a fast-acting silicone paste used as an external leak sealer and jointing compound. Fernox are the originals and a few other manufacturers produce similar now but to be honest I’m sure normal silicone would work just as well. Some mention that it sticks to most surfaces, including PP (polypropylene plastic) and makes a fantastic anti slip product, while others say that it's not quite as sticky as most glues and leaves a tacky mess until it dries. Lead times are shown on the product and trolley pages and are always advertised in working days (Monday to Friday).

An alternative for permanent fixtures is JB-weld, but its a similar story with that - the manufacturers say its non toxic (when set) but again thats not 'actually' a guarantee of being food-safe in hot wort or the after cleaning chemicals one may use. Apply LS-X direct form the tube and mould into shape using a spatula or knife previously dipped into soapy water (to prevent adhesion or dragging). You can't sand and paint it like plumber's epoxy, as it's still flexible when dry, but personally, I found plumber's epoxy horrible - nowhere near as good as this. For threads u want 18 or so wraps of ptfe and then a smear of LS-X, and then it’s perfect for smearing round the olives too. We’re an independent, privately owned plumbing merchant and have been supplying materials to plumbers since 1973. I would suggest using gloves when using it though: it's extremely sticky stuff and soap and water won't touch it.

You can put it on wet surfaces but it's a lot easier if they're dry - if it's still leaking, I find it much harder to get a good seal, and it definitely won't work if the system is under pressure, but other than that, it's worked every time for me. I still wont put it in my boiler as im all but 'must be natural' semi organic leaf hop no pellets no plastic no poison man but then I probably shouldn't be drinking beer. It is the superglue of sealants, and is not removed by water even when fresh from the tube (well durr!

They mention that it works well to seal numerous leaks in waste water pipes, high pressure systems, and compression joints. And by now BOTH of my hands were coated with the LSX I won't go into every detail, but I am sure you can imagine the situation! but I've not seen it visibly degrade over time in the boiler, so combined with the relatively small quantities contacting a lot of beer then I personally struggle to become very concerned about it. I certainly wouldn't bias it by what's natural; the numerous ingenious ways nature has devised to poison things is truly impressive, and I'm not convinced that evolution cares much about what happens to us beyond offspring-producing age. Good and bad really, can get you out of a situation if a small leak appears but honestly if it’s more than a very small weep it won’t seal.
