About this deal

William Bottrell (7 March 1816 – 27 August 1881) was a Cornish folklorist who documented many Cornish tales and wrote articles on Cornish life. Either way, it’s fitting that the legend of a mermaid has grown from a church which was supposedly founded by a woman who emerged from the sea. The blame for Matthew’s disappearance is often placed on the mermaid; she is depicted as an evil temptress who lured an innocent man to his death with her song. The delightful church of St Senara, situated in the lovely seaside village of Zennor, cowers in a hollow under the granite mass of Zennor Hill. There are two reasons this MPA is not “protected”, which illustrate the hollowness of Gove’s promises overall.

Elsewhere, mermaids are often pictured as almost identical to human women in shape, but with some subtle differences, such as pale skin and long green hair in Eastern Europe, or webbed hands and feet in China. Visitors are drawn to Zennor Church from all over the world by the legend of the Zennor Mermaid and by the magical story of the ancient Mermaid Chair. In the choir were some fine singers, but none finer than Mathy Trewhella, a handsome young man who sang a clear high tenor: his voice could be heard all over Zennor Churchtown when he wished. However it may be, her polite request had a magical effect upon the sailors, for they immediately “worked with a will,” hove anchor and set sail, not wishing to remain a moment longer than they could help near her habitation.Consenting to these technologies will allow us to process data such as browsing behaviour or unique IDs on this site. Inspired by medieval legend of a mermaid who lived at Pendour Cove, near Zennor, Cornwall, about whom various stories are told. With that Mathew picked up Morveren and ran into the sea never to be seen by the folk of Zennor again. On the chair's side there is a curious carving of a mermaid, a symbol which had several interpretations for medieval worshippers.
