My neighbour has gone down the standard national brood route and has now ended up on brood and a half, I would suggest that it is easier to inspect the 14 x 12 than brood and a half as it is less work and there is less chance of missing/harming the queen. If your queens are fecund enough to need that sized brood box then far better (IMHO) to go for double brood.
