About this deal

her follow-up, Into the Water, was a much quieter release, and wasn't even a mystery, IMO; it was a character-driven investigation of a situation that happened to have a body count, in a similar vein to ivy pochoda's exquisite These Women. From the first sentence to the last, this explosive , startling novel grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go.

In retrospect it did explained things, it was the moment all should have become clear in my mind (as I’m sure it will in the minds of more switched-on readers). We start at the end with the finding of Daniel’s body on his rented canal boat and then work back through the character’s backstories and who could possibly be responsible and why. Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Group Riverhead for this incredible ARC in exchange for mt honest opinion. A Slow Fire Burning is a hugely gripping, character-based thriller, with great writing and brilliant twists. The plot revolves around the gruesome death of Daniel Sutherland, a man in his twenties on his houseboat.

I love Paula Hawkins, and this is why - A Slow Fire Burning twists and turns like a great thriller should, but it's also deep, intelligent and intensely human . With characters and a setting similar to HBO’s streaming sensation Mare of Easttown, this story seems tailor-made for the streaming treatment. It’s a saying well-known to those recovering from destructive relationships, and it’s also the theme of the book. The story is narrated in the POV of various characters with each of them elucidating their innocence. Every character in A Slow Fire Burning has suffered, sometimes horribly, sometimes by the people they loved and trusted the most.Hawkins builds and layers to a point where it’s perfectly feasible that any one of them could have killed in cold blood. She could tell what he was thinking: fat old spinster, tree hugger, knit your own yogurt, curtain twitcher. I am not sure who was responsible, despite someone being convicted of the crime, and some of the characters didn’t really have any input at the ending. With a beautifully wrought cast of characters who are real and likeable even when they are complicated and flawed, a fantastic, picturesque London setting, twists and turns galore and exquisite prose, this is a high class read.

Fast-paced , highly charged and carried off with so much confidence that it is impossible to resist . I have to say that after a while, I got tired of the continuous bouts of extreme violence that Laura endured.out of 12 masterclass Four Star read, where simmering pain, injustice and most of all revenge, is a slow fire burning.
