About this deal

THAT is what makes this album so impressive to me - the sum of its parts is stronger than any album I've heard in a long time. Consenting to these technologies will allow us to process data such as browsing behavior or unique IDs on this site. Many critics and figures in the British media hyped the Arctic Monkeys and their rapid rise to acclaim through unconventional means.

I understand the Oasis one a little better, as they are a more recent band, and Whatever People Say I am, Thats What I am Not has a similar quality to the first two Oasis albums, in that its hard to believe a band can burst onto the scene already sounding this polished and this distinct, and drop an album that is so solid front to back. the boys may share a love of the smiths, the clash and the jam, but in no way were the monkeys ready to simply regurgitate the well-trodden brit-rock path. This album could be a blueprint for an imagined future; a reminiscence of the past; or your existence now.

The songs range from the good to the excellent, my favourites will always be the number one hit singles: 'When the Sun Goes Down'(I just love the melody at the beginning of it) and the throbbing indie anthem 'I Bet you Look Good on the Dancefloor', but all of the album only tracks benefit from consistent catchy guitar riffs and strong vocals. From gorgeous album art to world-class listening guides, you’ll find yourself discovering something new every time you listen. Released in 2006, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not is the debut album by English indie rock band Arctic Monkeys. Two years later we made the move to our present address, 35 The Headrow, where we have remained ever since.

He has contributed to MOJO, the BBC, The Guardian, Q and NME among others, and has interviewed Arctic Monkeys on many occasions. For me, it has a lot of memories attached to it so I'll always think of it as their best for me, but it captures a period of British music where things felt original and unique which is sorely lacking these days. and finally the album closer, a Certain Romance with its opening drum and guitar attack before settling into a perfect UK retro-rock dance groove with a totally different sound, and great lyrics condemning the vapidness and bad behavior of today's youth even as the singer admits he has friends who are the same.

Those demos built the band a rabid fan base before the Monkeys had released a record, even before they played more than a handful of gigs. Critics hugely praised the album for its depiction of youth British Culture and for resurging British indie music that had waned after the 1990s. Despite their tender years--or perhaps because of them--with 'Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not,' Arctic Monkeys found a new and unique way to chronicle the rushes of youth, and in doing so created a classic take on a stage of life we all experience.

The only thing I have against this album is that I don't think of it as quintessential vinyl material- there isn't a great deal of difference in the vinyl and the digital versions. When Whatever People Say I Am hit the streets in January 2006, it sold a gobsmacking 118,501 copies within its first week of release, which not only made it the fastest selling debut ever, but it sold more than the rest of the Top 20 combined a remarkable achievement by any measure. In effect, the group performed a complete run around the industry, avoiding conventional routes toward stardom, which paid off in spades. As catchy as those reference points are, it's the lyrics that have won this band a fiercely dedicated crowd very quickly. Breathless, hyperbolic praise was piled upon the Arctic Monkeys and their Bdebut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, an instant phenomenon without peer.

hence the razor-sharp lyricism that fuels songs like a certain romance, a witty observation of small-town life where theres only music so that theres new ringtones and where going out could sometimes mean having a pool cue wrapped around your head. This album takes everything that's good about the current crop of British bands (stop-start guitars, great hooks, catchy and danceable bass lines, great lyrics) and then turns it up to 11, so to speak. You can hear The Kinks, you can sense The Smiths and a love of the 60s but most of all you can hear The Arctic Monkeys.
