I liked the writing style in which the author's use of several narrators allowing each one to tell the story from their point of view. The language seems simple; no running to the dictionary to look up unfamiliar words or gasps at literary flourishes.

I struggled to get through this and will admit to skipping passages, especially when the kids were killing animals for fun. Many poorer areas lack a majority age group, which is due in part to the people in that area being constrained by circumstance rather than being able to choose where to retire, raise a family or grow up. The farming community itself has a tremendous impact on citified Celia and her children, especially Daniel and Evie. For twenty years, Celia Scott has watched her husband, Arthur, hide from the secrets surrounding his sister Eve's death.But Roy is in full narrative command, taking her time to point the reader to the next direction, but always certain – even if we are not – that what comes next is what must happen, not what we hope or wish would transpire. I would recommend this for anyone 18+ who enjoys stories of family secrets and mysteries of the non-cozy type. I felt as if this story could have happened anywhere in the US, yet it was supposed to have taken place in Kansas.
