About this deal

Usually love triangles like this make me pretty frustrated, because I don't like to see girls suffering from rejection. LGBTQ+ representation (0-5): 2 - I'm going to give this some extra loving because of the flashback with Hakozaki-sensei and Miyako that really feels like adult lesbians that exist in the real world and not just fantasy yuri decontextualized from society. So it's funny, having lived through those feelings, and it is also totally precious writing that captures that age. Every other choice makes a woman “unpure” which is why I loathe the concept of purity as a value of a woman’s worth that is still prevalent in this world.

This is a pretty complicated question and WP keeps eating my answer, so I’m going to invite you to come to the online Yuri panel on May 31 (link pending) and I’ll try to answer in more detail. The English translation licensed by Seven Seas Entertainment will be released on December 12th, 2019. There's an adorable scene where Hakozaki-sensei is yelling at Miyako for hanging out with one of Hakozaki-sensei's students (it was Sayaka). Bloom into You is a charming love story about two young women who together discover that their dreams of a heart-pounding romance can indeed come true. I think it may be one of the strongest volumes for that, probably the least cliche'd and more genuine. It’s the perfect note of hope going into the finale of one of not only the best yuri series, but best manga in general. The initial parts of this instalment deal with the fall out from Yuu’s decision and Nanami’s reaction to it and it is an absolute masterclass in storytelling. Yuu has always loved shoujo manga and fantasizes about the day that, she, too, will get a love confession that will send her heart a flutter. Y Maki es precioso, me encanta la sutilidad con la que lo han representado y cómo marca las distancias tajantemente con Tu.

Still, watching Sayaka tripping down the steps with joy after the scene in the viewing area made me very happy. Just like with gender, where there is fluidity between and outside of the Male/Female binary, I think there can be fluidity between and around asexual and sexual and aromantic and romantic feelings. Without spoilers though for some really wonderful scenes, I do want to highlight some of their dialogue. I was cheering for them as they raced to make this final connection, to make what we have been waiting for throughout this entire series happen. We're finally reaching a point where Yuu and Touko are figuring out their feelings and what they want their relationship to look like, which is so nice after so many volumes.Fortified by the knowledge that she is choosing to do what she wants to for herself, so she can grow from it, Sayaka finally confesses her feelings to Touko.

Also, since we've been talking about quality depictions of teenagers, I know that Touko has sexual desire for Yuu, that's been clear throughout the series. In the morning, when Hakozaki notices, Miyako says: "I didn't trust myself in the same bed with you. It’s almost like they needed this brief separation to see just how much they truly do need each other in their lives. But things don't go as planned, since Nanami instead of accepting Yuu's feelings just says "I'm sorry. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.Sayaka and Touko have their school trip where Sayaka takes her long awaited chance to tell Touko how she feels. It's still an imperfect series in a lot of ways, but it is also a crucial series in the way Yuu and Maki provide media representation of aromantic/asexual people.
