About this deal

Fortunately he changed his mind, and the manuscript of the earliest English autobiography is now safely in the British Library.

This is a spare, uncluttered book, free of the Wikipedia bric-a-brac that often clogs up historical fiction, but you feel in every sentence the weight of history pressing down on and confining these women.Despite being a novella, the book dragged on and was effectively little more than a description of the hardships the two women had faced.

Join us for an Edinburgh launch of this captivating historical novel - discover a new talent, rediscover two mystics hidden in history. Where MacKenzie does innovate in her re-telling, her instincts for narrative and structure aren't strong. While reading it I was totally immersed in the lives of Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe - both medieval mystics. While both wrestle with their relationship to God, I found that this novella both evoked how serious and important these questions were in the late medieval period, and had resonance for modern readers who don’t consider themselves to be religious. Quoting Saint Paul, the anchorite mentioned that the Holy Ghost intercedes for us with morning and weeping that cannot be expressed, meaning that He inspires us to pray abundantly with tears beyond counting. But while their writings about mysticism have always fascinated me, the women themselves have often felt remote. Julian, an anchoress, has not left Norwich, nor the cell to which she has been confined, for twenty- three years. I had to get over my historical novel antipathy, too, but it’s so different from anything else I’ve read recently and so accomplished I’m glad I did.

Her visions of Christ – which have long alienated her from her family and neighbours, and incurred her husband’s abuse – have placed her in danger with the men of the Church, who have begun to hound her as a heretic.Ho letto le prime 50 pagine tutte d’un fiato, mi sono detta:”oh, finalmente sono incappata in un buon romanzo” e niente, non è stato così.

But I'm just so frustrated by this continued trend of heavy-handed "feminist" reimaginings of the past which use dummies of medieval women to ventriloquize fantasies of a Handsmaid's Tale-esque past which flatten out women's actual historical experiences and fail to truly listen to their voices. It brings fresh eyes and vitality to the lives of two real, medieval women of faith: Margery Kempe, and the anchoress Julian of Norwich. Stunningly original … Her skill is in creating a story that goes much deeper than its slender spine and spare prose might suggest.Four stars, probably because I’ve read other books recently that do alternate chapters for characters and I’m not sure I like this style. In her debut novel Victoria MacKenzie has distilled this chaotic, episodic rampage of a life into a beautifully lucid account of a spiritual adventure.
