About this deal

Not only does Swanson articulate all the ways we are enslaved by sin, but he also actually offers a way to break the cycle through the penitential rite and forgiveness.

Then there’s the fact that Claire is a doctor, and Elizabeth a schoolteacher - so in general Claire has more thrilling storylines from her occupation. Now, I can see why it'd have been marketed as such, but out there are many people who'll also be pushed away by this, as I was. But even back then I loved historical fiction, as my friend well knew, and thick books had never put me off either. This is Diana Gabaldon's longtime online hangout, and I have been Section Leader (moderator) of the Diana Gabaldon section on the forum since 2008.I’m going to attempt to summarise each of the blurbs for the rest of this article so that you can get a feel for what the series is about. Elizabeth was a wonderful protagonist; she is hot-headed, stubborn and entranced by the Mohawk way of life. It was confirmation to what I had suspected the whole time: someone trying to imitate Gabaldon and falling way short of the mark.

Jemima Southern is a dangerous schemer who has destroyed more than one family, and her anger touches everyone, as do her secrets.I appreciate the attention to detail but without the characters engaging me it became an almost tedious read. I'm currently reading the fourth book "Fire Along the Sky" and on page 69 it says "Over the years three women had borne him eleven children, and five of those survived" - him being Nathaniel. har har), but all those being said I found myself truly drawn to the characters and really NEEDING to know what happens next!

I read 876 pages, and in the last 20 or so, TWO major plot points were introduced (one way more significant than the other, but still) and NEITHER WERE RESOLVED. Elizabeth is likewise no Claire Fraser – but a lot of Claire’s appeal lies in her delivering 19th century humour to the 17th century. One day the subject of the Battle of Saratoga came up and Diana mentioned that she had used the battle as a setting for a scene, and this happened just as I was writing a similar scene. But on the eve of the War of 1812, an unexpected guest arrives from Scotland: It is the Bonners’ distant cousin, the newly widowed Jennet Scott of Carryckcastle.

And, this is something I frequently remark on, both her male and female protagonists are equally compelling. It’s like two paragraphs, there’s no dialog between the characters or anything — they come and they go. Elizabeth’s emotions are constantly being described as ‘written across her face’, much as Claire’s often are. Diana is one of the most supportive and generous people I have ever known, but still I was taken by surprise.Elizabeth Middleton, an Englishwoman, arrives in upper New York State in December 1792 with the hopes of fulfilling a lifelong dream, to be a schoolteacher. But it had that headstrong female character, the dangerous-but-charming love interest, the chorus of earthy and interesting background characters. Nathaniel saw something he had forgotten about women : that words can do the same work as hands and mouths and a man's body, that she was as undone by his admission of desire as she had been by his kiss.
