Isherwood’s sixth novel, The World in the Evening (1954), written mostly during this period, was less successful than earlier ones. He becomes involved with the Communists, along with one of the young men who run the girls that Norris employs to indulge his masochistic fantasies.

And if, in my letters to England, I sometimes referred to him as ‘a most amazing old crook’, I only meant by this that I wanted to imagine him as a glorified being; audacious and self-reliant, reckless and calm. Isherwood's fictionalized account of life in Weimar Berlin is frequently combined with his later novel, Goodbye to Berlin in the single volume The Berlin Stories.I have the hard back edition which comes with its own outer casing; it has 170 pages and some lovely illustrations by Beryl Cook which add greatly to the piece. In this book, - and in his more well-known one, Goodbye to Berlin – mainly because it was later turned into the movie, Cabaret – he recounts his experiences in that city, as political instability intensified, and lines of allegiance became sharply drawn, and the Nazi party, initially regarded as a kind of loony fringe, not to be taken seriously, began its terrifying rise.

The most common symptoms of a hand fracture include severe pain, swelling, bruising or bleeding, deformity and discolouration of the skin, and limited mobility of the hand. It gives a true to life picture of life in Germany (mostly in Berlin) during the last years of the Weimar Republic, till about the first year of Hitler's rule and describes a number of characters the author meets/gets acquainted with.Norris Changes Trains, and Goodbye to Berlin, on which the musical Cabaret was based, as well as works of nonfiction and biography. Many of his works are more like diaries than plot driven stories, but the journey is very enjoyable even if the destination isn't very exciting.
