About this deal

A few months ago we saw Olympus release a wide to tele professional zoom lens which has now been followed by a fast tele zoom aimed at professional sports and nature photographers (this will no doubt appeal to portrait photographers as well). ZUIKO PRO' high-performance lens features a dust proof and splash proof construction rugged enough for professional use, especially ideal when paired with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 III and other pro bodies in Olympus cameras arsenal. So while it may be harder to deliver very shallow depth of field effects with smaller formats like Micro four Thirds, it does come with the benefit of more forgiving focus. The direct debit payments will commence at the end of the first month following receipt of your goods. But in nature and sport photography sharpness is crucial – in this line of work we do need to show as much detail as possible in our subject and kit lenses won’t always cut the mustard.

PRO is compact and lightweight, yet will provide you with a 35mm equivalent of an 80-300mm lens when attached your Micro Four Thirds camera . and the subject quite close, but even then the background isn’t hugely blurred compared to larger formats or brighter lenses. In this position, the focus ring stops when you reach infinity or the close-focus point, much like on a classic manual-focus lens. ISO values are 1600 and 1250 respectively, and this doesn’t impact on the detail (I wanted very high shutter speeds because the squirrel in particular was incredibly active). Steve is absolutely correct, the f stop is a ratio of the front glass and focal lens, nothing more, nothing less.As you’d expect from the longer focal length, the background details are enlarged, including the bokeh blobs, and again the prime lens with its brighter focal ratio delivers a shallower depth of field. It’s a little big for the far smaller E-M10 body, which will make you think you’re holding all lens and no camera. Downscaling to small lightweight equipment has been a lifesaver – and contrary to the many urban myths which circulate in photography forums, for most usage there isn’t a big trade-off in image quality or performance.

The thin body constructed by metal, constructed of rich 6 elements in 3 groups (1 HR lens) promises virtually no image degradation. You can also remove the collar altogether, but although this lightens the load by 120 grams I wouldn’t recommend it.So even if it isn’t quite DSLR-level performance in some situations—and in static situations it can be better than DSLR-level performance—it’s state-of-the-art for m4/3. A manual focus clutch permits quick switching between AF and MF, and a programmable L-Fn button avails lens-based control over shooting settings. Provides an amazing equivalent of 80-300mm on a 35mm camera, giving great flexibility for portraits through to wildlife. It meant that I didn’t have to pull the 40-150mm off the camera nearly as much as subjects got smaller and closer. The lens barrel is constructed from a combination of metal and high quality plastics, with a glossy finish an I'm currently on vacation with just my phone but I'll take a closer look when I get back to the computer. It attaches to the front of the lens via an inner mechanism and a quick-release ring allows you to twist and push back the hood for storage, without having to detach and reverse-mount it.Here’s a shot approaching the closest focusing distance, and lower on the page I have another at the closest distance. PRO that extends its focal length to a whopping 210mm (35mm equivalent of 420mm) for those really long shots. Telephoto zoom is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides an 80-300mm equivalent focal length range. With a minimum focus distance of just 70cm at all focal lengths, a dedicated Fn button, manual focus clutch and a sliding, protective lens hood, the new 40-150mm f/2.

We know that the beauty of Micro 4/3 is the compact size and low weight, but we have to understand that long fast lenses with professional build quality simply cannot be small and light thanks to the laws of physics (but they will be more compact than their full frame counterparts). The bundled lens hood has been marvelously designed to collapse back onto the lens for easy storage. Take the (very brief) amount of time needed to orient yourself to how it works and you’ll be sliding it back over the lens or taking it off the lens with aplomb.I will also not sugar coat it…it is a pain in the rear to carry around if you want to go anywhere light and compact. Don’t take the time to do that, and you’ll probably accidentally take the hood off instead of sliding it. This and the absence of gears, claims Olympus, makes the focussing performance lightning fast and very smooth. I didn't match ISOs and it's probably not a perfect test, but I think it provides some insight and could help someone make that decision for themselves.
