While this made the book hard to read at times, it gave the story the gravity and openness it needed and was owed. Apesar de não aparecer muito, Annie, a verdadeira mãe, também é um ponto importante no livro, pois percebe que tudo o que fez para proteger a filha do mundo da prostituição foi em vão. Apesar de nos apresentar uma linguagem um pouco crua, nada habitual em Lesley Pearse e que poderá até chocar algumas almas mais sensíveis, admiro-a por não ter tido medo de o fazer! And that is what infuriates me — Belle is at one time completely under the spell of comfortable living that being a courtesan gets her and eventually the fight drains out of her.Yet thoughts of home - and the knowledge her status as golden girl cannot last - compel her to break out of her gilded cage. While we have all heard of topics like human trafficking or prostitution, it is daunting to read such an in-depth depiction into the sordid mess that it is. Frankly, I think that the setting of New Orleans was the best among the other places in the novel, and perhaps if the story were centred there with focus on the more fleshed out characters like Etienne, Lisette and Noah, it would have made for a more engaging read. No one who has endured so much would be fool enough to willingly walk into unknown destinations with strange men, right? The subject matter of Human Trafficking had me concerned as I would normally not choose to read that type of book. I found that there was a lot of repetition in the book, which made it a lot longer than it needed to be. It was an extraordinary childhood and in all her books, Lesley has skilfully married the pain and unhappiness of her early experiences with a unique gift for storytelling.They eventually connect with Etienne, who vows to help in nay way he can as he is overcome by remorse.

It is a long book and covers many years and events in Belle's life so it really takes you on a journey. she is a storyteller and a master of gripping storylines that keep the reader hooked from beginning to end, Pearse introduces you to characters that it is impossible not to care about or forget. The Promise vividly describes life behind the front line and the tragic choices that war forces people to make.
