The only SAM CDs with bonus material are the 1993 One Way CD, the 1999 BMG/Buddha CD and the 2009 Rev-Ola CD. Yes, the VCD should have been a DVD but the footage is still awesome and yes, better material could have been chosen for disc 5 but it still has plenty of fascinating nuggets like "Orange Claw Hammer" with Zappa on guitar and the live stuff from the TMR and "Decals" periods.

Where two or more commission bids at the same level are recorded we have the right to prefer the first bid made (where this can be reasonably ascertained). But hey, at least you get to witness how the conversation with the kids who just moved here from Reseda ended up on the album. The highlight for me is the Captain's rendering of "Orange Claw Hammer", accompanied by Frank Zappa on acoustic guitar. From the formative years of a pre low-register Beefheart in the 1966 demo of "Obeah Man" on the opening track of CD 1, to the instrumental complexities of the Gary Lucas rendering of "Flavor Bud Living" on the closing track 23, CD 5, this excellently produced and presented box set should enable every keen collector to join up an awful lot of dots in the magical musical journey of the obscure genius that is Captain Beefheart. The closest to a Best Of collection as we are likely to see, this career-spanning set corrals rare tracks from a variety of sources (band members' personal archives, live tracks, demos, worktapes, radio spots) along with over 30 minutes of Enhanced CD footage of live performances, 112 pages of text and never-before-published photos, the complete Trout Mask Replica house sessions, and John 'Drumbo' French's "colorful" history of the band. I should dip myself into that coca-cola This box set is subject to the box set-curse more than any other I'm aware of. This is the most imbalanced piece of the whole affair, I guess because they just threw anything on there from his post- Trout Mask Replica period they couldn’t fit anywhere else (with a time span of 1969–1982).The first release of this package of works was a 5xCD set, including a 112-page booklet, within a casebound outer that was inserted into a slipcase. I probably end up only listening to these instrumental tracks, rehearsals, field recordings and Trout House / studio chit-chats once every couple of years but it’s always an experience.
