About this deal

In 1974, her grandmother died leaving Norris the family farm in South Dakota, and she and her future husband, the poet David Dwyer, decided to temporarily relocate there until arrangements to rent or sell the property could be made. Norris also discusses some of the more difficult aspects of Catholicism, including a fairly long chapter on the habits (i.

She bequeathed a group of paintings to the Victoria Art Gallery because she loved Bath – not just for the city’s beauty, but also because she gained relief from arthritis through thermal treatment there. This is the question that poet Kathleen Norris asks us as, somewhat to her own surprise, she found herself on two extended residencies at St. e. attire) and several, almost academic like articles on lesser known saints, revered because they were willing to be murdered to keep their virginity. She suggests that faith is more process than product, more, perhaps, like the act of writing than like the final draft of a document.

For those of us like yours truly, who could happily live in a fortress of solitude surrounded by books and cats, this is an interesting take on the strength of human bonds and the necessity of community. Part memoir, part meditation, The Cloister Walk is the movingly written and thought-provoking record of a married, Protestant woman’s time spent in a community of men in a traditional Benedictine monastery in Minnesota. What is the role of silence in spiritual life, and why is silence so hard to come by in our culture?

We hope it will prove to be a valuable accompaniment to Kathleen Norris’s unique work — “a gift of insight… one of those rare books too rich to race through” ( The Kansas City Star). Ultimately, faith—and hope for that matter—are rooted in the real presence of God in this world, a presence known to us primarily through channels of the heart.I started this book at the same time I started to read a psalm every day and the accompanying commentary on the Enduring Word commentary site.
