About this deal

Yazmina, a young pregnant woman stolen from her remote village and now abandoned on Kabul's violent streets . But Rodriguez sets the scene for the reader, detailing their culture and social expectations and evocatively illustrating a city where life is lived on a knife-edge. Oh, lord … being a vegetarian (or worse, a vegan) in Japan is nearly as bad as relying on oxygen if you live under the sea. It was eye-opening and heart-wrenching, particularly when every hard-won freedom is lost in the instant the Taliban regains power.

Although my overall verdict for this novel is positive, I couldn't help but feeling at certain points that I was reading a weakly scripted feminist soap opera. The ending was both sad and happy because there is no way that these characters, strong though they may be, can save all the women of Afghanistan and themselves. It was hard separate what the backdrop to this story was from present day Taliban ruled, Afghanistan. Do you like your main characters to be women who break down their own doors when necessary, women-who-don't-put-up-with-bad-stuff, women who don't wait for Prince Charming to come visit their castle but who may actually ride out and knock on castle doors themselves? I found myself completey immersed in another world and felt as though I came to know the characters of this story intimately.Celebrating Deborah Rodriguez's international bestseller – now reissued in a special 10th anniversary edition! Charlie, the rootless daughter of American missionaries, now working as a hairdresser in Northern California. To be sure, Sunny, the main character, has created a place where both Afghans and visitors can relax and share cultures and friendship, and the "tea" house becomes a central part of the setting.

CANDACE , a wealthy American who has finally left her husband for her Afghan lover, the enigmatic Wakil. Time is compressed, relationships move fast, and the normal patterns of waiting before you talk intimately are foregone.

The plot constantly threatens to become interesting, a tragedy is always imminent, something of consequence could actually happen. Describes a book or dust jacket that does show some signs of wear on either the binding, dust jacket or pages. Yazmina was on her own though and would’ve faced very different circumstances had Sunny not overheard her story that day, which made me sad. Some chapters and phrases dealing with the disastrous condition of women made me feel so lucky to have been born in India. Her sister Layla has become an outspoken women’s rights activist and, thanks to social media, is quite the celebrity.

The novel deals with Afghani issues and culture regarding the roles women, friendship, family, country decisions and of course, some romance. The characters are lovable and their good qualities seep through in the story and you’ll want to help them overcome their faults yourself. One criticism made of the book was how many characters there are –perhaps too many – with members of our group feeling there were male characters in the background who added very little to the story and there was a sense of loss in some of the characters not being more developed throughout the book.Due to my love of reading I thought I would set up a blog to share with people my thoughts on the books i've read.
