About this deal

The lens isn’t the best: there’s a fair amount of barrel distortion, but quality is the best we’ve seen from any rear camera. Wi fi built in - and with the app its easy to sort out also, you connect to it and not the other way around so that's nice. You can see both front (above) and rear footage (below) that was recorded by the Nextbase 512GW and GWRC at the same time. It is designed to be connected to your 512GW using a 6m cable, which can be neatly hidden under your roof lining.

You’ll get the best quality if you set the circular polariser to minimise reflections of your dashboard, but its effectiveness will depend on the angle of the sun – you can’t continually rotate the filter as you drive of course. Featuring a CMOS sensor, the main camera of the Nextbase 512GW delivers high-quality images and videos. How much better if you just plugged it all in, answered the "where do you want PiP to appear" and then got on with fastening seat belt etc knowing the unit would always start recording without further intervention. The dashcam also offers a time lapse mode, which allows for recording at a lower frame rate over an extended period, maximizing memory card capacity. It is soldered directly onto the circuit board and the usb cable is quite stiff so as the near door is opened it flexes the cable which must stress the connector joint.

As demonstrated by the grab below, you might be able to read a plate in low light when you’re close to the vehicle in front, but passing cars tend to be quite blurry. And on that score, the 512GW is roughly on a par with the 412GW, despite the upgrade to a Sony Exmor R sensor. The 512GW (GPS WiFi) offers high-resolution video quality and a built-in WiFi system for easily accessing video clips on a smartphone. I adjusted the rear camera angles today and it just stopped working, plenty of slack to connector so it’s not damaged the cable when adjusting. Also, in a standard hatchback, 6m is way too long, so you’ll have to find somewhere to ‘lose’ around 2m of it. But with the GPS capability, Wi-Fi and the facility to see video alongside the map location via Nextbase’s software, it will do the job well as a personal automotive surveillance device. The healthy data rate and Full HD resolution provide footage that’s faithful in colour and relatively devoid of artefacts. Only one of the quick-release mounts is included in the package, however; you’ll have to attach the ball joint to whichever screen attachment you decide to use. Perfect solution would be to assume a default position for rear PiP so no question is asked at power up, and add the ability to change the default PiP position to the menu system (left/right/never).
