About this deal

He also doesn't shy away from the harder moments including the loss of Lennard and Myfanwy, telling of their lives and their loss in affectionate terms that honour their lives rather than their deaths. In the 1970s, he also acted in radio comedies, including the weekly topical satire Week Ending (in which he regularly played such figures as then UK Foreign Secretary Dr David Owen) and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (as the "B Ark Captain" in the sixth episode). But life hasn't all been so easy- from missing out on a key role in Dad's Army to nearly drowning in a freak diving accident, David has had his fair share of ups and downs, and has lost some of his nearest and dearest along the way. Prompted by his retirement from his full-time job in the NHS, and through his continuing work in Nepal and Ukraine, Henry has been forced to reflect more deeply about what 40 years spent handling the human brain has taught him.

Born in 1940, David Jason spent his early life dodging bombs and bullies, both with impish good timing. Then I was lucky enough to watch all of the Touch of Frost on Netflix, which I now own them as well. Humphrey Barclay, who recruited Jason to appear in Do Not Adjust Your Set (partly to counter the more highbrow style of Idle, Jones, and Palin), [9] admired his sense of timing. A second volume, Only Fools and Stories: From Del Boy to Granville, Pop Larkin to Frost was published in October 2017. However, it picked up thereafter and was very interesting to hear of David's exploits and antics in between acting and performing. Sir David also takes a nostalgic tour of his childhood roots in North Finchley - including a visit to his old school - and is on location on his latest project Still Open All Hours.

Barker would become a mentor to David, leading to hugely successful stints in Porridge and Open All Hours. This was an amazing read, loved all the anecdotes, so fascinating to find out more about him and other (now famous) people he came across at the time and really lovely to read about his close relationship with Ronnie B. David Jason has managed to illustrate that missing out the autobiographical genre from my reading means I’m missing out on memory, entertainment and enjoyment. He did train as an electrician, but rarely seemed to be out of work as an actor to have to fall back on this alternative career.

Winner of the National Book Awards Autobiography of the Year The long-awaited autobiography of one of Britain's best-loved actors Born the son of a Billingsgate market porter at the height of the Second World War, David Jason spent his early life dodging bombs and bullies, both with impish good timing. Already 3 chapters in on my Kindle version – started reading it at 3am this morning – great read so far – don’t forget DJ is also on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show tomorrow morning (11th October). He is assisted by his brother Rodney (played by Nicholas Lyndhurst) and Grandad (played by Lennard Pearce) and, in later episodes, Uncle Albert (played by Buster Merryfield). It was fascinating getting behind the scenes glimpses into how many of the nations favourite shows were made. Conversely, I did find the first two to five hours a little bit boring as a lot of detail was put into explaining his early days on stage.

I got the distinct impression that here is a man who is very private and really doesn't want to give too much of himself away. Jason's father, Arthur Robert White, was a porter at Billingsgate Fish Market, and his mother, Olwen Jones, was from Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales, and worked as a charwoman. Seldom have I had the good fortune to read (listen) to such an entertaining, amusing and well written autobiography.
