There are almost too many same-sexcapades to list, but Scotty "tricked" with or arranged tricks for Cary Grant, Randolph Scott, George Cukor, Spencer Tracy, and the former King of England, just to name a few.Younger readers--at least those raised in the Internet and TMZ age--may find nearly as shocking the fact that the stories were squelched by studio publicists and remained largely under wraps back in the day. As a young boy, it seems he could only marvel at the amount of sex the animals on his farm were having.

All of these actors, directors, and heads of state only stayed in the closet because of the very real possibility of personal and professional repercussions. Not many of the names outed in this book have not been outed before, and now that they are all dead it is hard for the ordinary stargazer to know what to believe or trust. But regardless of whether the people he’s outed we’re actually gay/bi/liked hookups with a gas station attendant, the book is actually quite boring. He shows no regrets and rationalizes that his life was dedicated to bringing ‘joy’ to a multitude of people.Again, I don't know that we get to label other people's experiences, but what I can say is that reading about the ones Bowers describes was uncomfortable in the worst imaginable ways. Eventually he joined the Marines and after his discharge at the end of the war he got employment pumping gas at a Hollywood gas station. Scotty’s family was poor like 98% of all other families were and both parents had to work long hours. He seems to have made peace with his childhood so I will accept that even if it makes me sad to read about the adults using him like they did.
