Antenne Books was realised as a distribution platform against this background, initiated to support the large growth of these emerging publishers, who at the time had limited means to distribute their work using traditional models of book distribution. Grayson Perry has been using sketchbooks as a place to record and develop ideas - whether for pots, tapestries, clothes, houses or exhibitions, or for nothing at all - for over thirty years.

I feel this makes the sketchbook seem very personal despite the drawings being so well planned and executed, themselves like finished artwork. By using the site you agree to be bound by the Terms and Conditions of use relevant at the time of your visit.Between the covers I feel safe – the drawings need never be seen by anyone but me – and thus I can play. I drew less and less on paper – I usually worked directly onto the pots, with no preparatory drawings at all.

I think my attitude towards the sketchbook originates from when my grandmother gave me a little stack of very cheap notebooks.One game we often played involved inventing a character, then drawing their family, then their house, car, holiday destination, etc. They understood that students would often choke when laying out their ideas in a larger, more finished form. I treasured them and filled them with diagrams of fantasy aircraft and plans of racing cars, adventure comics and war scenes.

If I put pen to paper it can feel like I have a version of the Midas touch – each mark becomes a pound sign. The site offers a facility for you to contribute content (including, for example, written comments and/or photographs). In the early years after college, sketchbooks were a way of keeping my practice going, as I had no other creative outlet; and I put several hours into each image, giving the books the obsessive, private quality of outsider art.I have to feel I have developed an idea enough before committing to the labour-intensive version – beginning with postage stamp-size doodles, through to double page full-colour layouts that may take several hours. Copyright in non-photographic images and video material on the site belongs to various owners and permission to reproduce or use any such image or video material must first be obtained from Antenne Books. The density of thought, the love of art and the sheer number of man-hours in each one load them with huge meaning and memory for me.
