When selecting the best fire extinguishers, our Lab experts and engineers zeroed in on products that passed industry tests, such as rigorous safety tests set by UL Solutions. We consulted Blake Shugarman, a principal engineer at UL Solutions, who oversees the company’s quality control and certification requirements for fire extinguishers. Shugarman provided insight into industry standards and what consumers should look for when purchasing a fire extinguisher. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) extinguishers are used on fires involving burning liquids (Class B), and electrical fires, such as of large computer equipment, so are practical in offices. CO2 works by suffocating the fire and does not cause damage to the electrical items or cause the system to short circuit. When dealing with Lithium-Ion battery fires, water-based extinguishers will provide an essential cooling effect, but they are not able to form a thermal barrier around the fire. When you run out of water-based extinguishant, you’ve run out of fire suppressing power. The battery forms its own flammable gases (including oxygen) and heat, and will re-ignite, burning until the cell fully discharges its energy. Wet chemical extinguishers create a layer of foam on the surface of the burning oil or fat, preventing oxygen from fuelling the fire any further. The spray also has a cooling effect.

Available in three and six litres, water spray fire extinguishers are suitable to fires involving organic solid materials such as wood, cloth, paper, plastics or coal.
