About this deal

It had seemed so simple. Get in, get the information, get out. But now they were getting inside her mind and she didn’t know how to stop them…

Publication Order of D.I. Kim Stone Short Stories/Novellas

I don't want to say too much about this book as I feel it is best to go into this book not knowing too much about plot. The brief synopsis is that human remains have been found at a former children's home. Through the course of the investigation, it becomes clear that the human remains may be connected to recent murders. But how? Why? Plus, young women/teens from the children's home disappeared ten years ago. What's the connection? But as she breaks the devastating news to the victim’s wife, Diane Phipps, Kim can’t help feeling that something isn’t quite right about the woman’s reaction. The author introduces an array of characters who were present at the end of Crestwood, many of whom could have been responsible for either set of murders. Marsons has written a novel which doesn’t read like a debut. It’s perfectly plotted, complex and succeeds in adding something new to the serial killer sub-genre. It’s a difficult novel to review, not because of any shortcomings, but because to reveal anything at all about the plot would be doing it a serious disservice. The book does occasionally descend into cliché. Things are said about serial killers that have been said before, and at times the characters feel like ones that have been written before. Yet this is a well-trodden area, and in the end Silent Scream is a great addition to it, from a writer who I hope to see more from. In amongst some darkness with subjects like abuse and neglect there is light with kindness from some of the characters that had us loving them even more.

When the lifeless body of a man is found on an industrial estate, Detective Kim Stonearrives on the scene and discovers he’s been tortured in the worst way imaginable. Then the body of a young woman is found dead by suffocation and Kim makes two chilling discoveries. The victim spent time at the clinic too, and her death was also staged to look like a suicide. Anche la scrittura, di basso livello. Non so nella versione inglese, ma in quella italiana avrò contato almeno 15 scoppi di risate. Imbarazzante e fastidioso. Dialoghi da orticaria. When the bodies of a middle-aged couple are discovered in a burnt-out car, Kim can’t ignore the chilling similarity to the deaths of Erica and Keith – the only loving parents Kim had ever known.
