This definitive and bestselling field guide is the perfect companion for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers. This book holds a special place in my birding heart. It helped propel me into the bird-watching fray. By Alexander Lees and James Gilroy; Helm, 2022; reviewed in BBby Martin Collinson ( Brit. Birds115: 231–232) and for BTO by Paul Stancliffe. I love learning about birds but also enjoy a good and entertaining story. These books do a great job of combining the two.

This book details his many adventures along the way. I loved that he partnered with locals at every step of the journey to help. I was amazed at how popular birding seemed throughout the world and that most people genuinely want to conserve these wild places. It's not often a field guide comes along that can accurately be described as a game-changer, but this might just be one [...] Unrivalled coverage of British birds. It's an absolute must."

The book has a lot of interesting facts about owls, but more than anything, it reads like an entertaining novel with great stories of their relationship. From learning how to feed Wesley thousands of mice to Wesley helping O’Brien through her illness, this book is highly recommended for a fun read. Several publications compete for the title ‘best British bird book’; Collins Bird Guide is the preferred choice of many birders, but may be over-comprehensive for some; the RSPB Handbook of British Birds, which features only birds seen in Britain, is another favourite; and for those who prefer photos to illustrations, Britain’s Birds: An Identification Guide to the Birds of Great Britain & Ireland is an excellent choice. Easy-to-use and pleasant to contemplate, this book is a must for both bird and palaeontology enthusiasts!

this is a significant new field guide, and birders are unlikely to be disappointed; everyone will learn something from this book." Key facts relating to each bird, which has been expertly verified by the RSPB and top bird author Rob Hume. Collins Bird Guide may be a tad too comprehensive for a beginner birder who is only interested in identifying British species. Many of the birds covered in the Collins are not present in Britain, so unless you’re planning a European bird trip or have an interest in foreign species, then you may want to look elsewhere; either Britain’s Birds or the RSPB Handbook of British Birds would fit the bill. The first thing that strikes you about this anthology of fiction and poetry inspired by the work of artist Joseph Cornell is what a beautiful object it is. Cornell, who made boxed assemblages, was a birdwatcher and, for this book, Safran Foer invited noted writers including Joyce Carol Oates, Joanna Scott, Siri Hustvedt and Lydia Davis to respond to Cornell’s Aviary series of boxes. Their pieces appear alongside full-colour plates. The author does an excellent job of educating readers and weaving in captivating stories and humor. If you prefer illustrations to photos, and want a bird guide that covers only British species, then the RSPB Handbook of British Birds would be an excellent choice. Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara is 40 km from the resort, while Ranminitenna Tele Cinema Village is 46 km away.
