About this deal

Sometimes called Dutch gin or Holland gin, genever is a sweetened style of gin that originated in the Netherlands. Today, it is only distilled in that country and in neighboring areas of Europe. The biggest name in genever is Bols, and it is one of the few brands that is available worldwide. But others see something we laymen and women wouldn’t normally find in the microscope lens: they see beauty. The carefully chosen ingredients that form the basis of Blue Bottle Gin’s exceptional flavour and eye-catching appeal are where the narrative of the gin begins. Juniper Berries: The essence of each ingredient is carefully removed and distilled into liquid perfection as part of the laborious distillation process that transforms it from components to glass.

This gin is distilled in a copper pot still named "Marjorie." The botanical list includes juniper, angelica root, cassia bark, cinnamon, coriander seed, lemon peel, licorice, nutmeg, orange peel, and orris root. It is bottled at a standard 40 percent ABV (80 proof). While alcohol was scarce during the war, today there is an abundance of locally produced alcohol and fine-drinking establishments to visit - whether you are a fan of craft beers or artisanal gin. Gin lovers must try one of Guernsey’s very own boutique gins while visiting. New Western Gin: This is really a catch-all term for newer gins that don’t fit into the previous categories. But the through line is that these gins, while still using juniper as a key ingredient, are flavored with a wide range of botanicals, and often use ones that are grown locally to showcase the flavors of where they are made.

Apple & Thyme Twist

You will find the gin to be very aromatic and filled with rich flavors, making it a true delight for any gin lover. This brings us to my newest drink crush: Gray Whale Gin. Distilled in California by Golden State Distillery, Gray Whale takes us on a wild, windows-down kind of ride down the Pacific Coastline, as each bottle is made with a blend of six sustainably sourced California botanicals: juniper, lime, fir tree, almonds, mint, and sea kelp. Gin (a.k.a. “Dutch Courage”) is arguably one of the most versatile liquors out there. It's usually made from a minimum of 10 botanical ingredients, the most common of which is juniper berries. (Thanks to this antioxidant-rich "super fruit," gin has long been surrounded by an aura of health—in the 16th century, it was even used to treat stomach aches and anxiety.) Aviation's choice of a rye base gives this gin a creamier mouthfeel than most gins. It is a gin that you can enjoy chilled on its own, which is great news for super dry martini fans.

stationed in West Berlin. Collins later founded Schwarzwald Dry Gin which became Monkey 47 Gin in 2006!

RASPBERRY & MINT GIN & TONIC TWIST

Once a one-bottle brand, Aviation has expanded its portfolio to include Aviation Old Tom. It's the distillery's take on an old, sweeter style of gin, but they don't add sugars or flavorings, which is customary. Instead, they rely on whiskey barrel aging to bring out an Old Tom taste and accentuate the original Aviation's natural sweetness. The liquid’s naturally occurring blue colour change results from the addition of a carefully chosen flower extract during distillation. The sensation of drinking gin is further enhanced by this change. Blue Bottle Gin The Classy Drink The award-winning Blue Bottle Gin is another boutique gin distilled within the Island that draws inspiration from the beautiful coastline for its handcrafted taste. Alongside the traditional juniper, drinkers can delight in the tropical (almost coconut) scent of the local gorse flowers, which annually turn the Guernsey cliff tops into fields of bright gold. These flavours are complimented alongside the sweetness of nutmeg and hint of cubeb pepper. We think this bottle is ridiculously cool … we hope we look as suave as the woman on the label after a few gins! Thanks to an infusion of natural floral extracts, which gives the gin its eye-catching blue tint, Blue Bottle Gin’s allure extends beyond its flavour. A Botanical Alchemy:

We love the shape of this bottle, as it’s completely unique and we’re yet to see another gin (or spirit) with a bottle like this. If you have yet to taste genever, it is unlike any other gin you've had. This style of gin is as if a soft Scotch whisky were married with gin, and Bols' malty feel is a perfect example. Based on Lucas Bols' original recipe from 1820, it has a wonderful balance of sweet malt and subdued juniper and citrus. It is triple distilled using equal parts malt wine and neutral grain spirits that are infused with natural flavors. Like many other brands, Bols has expanded their genever selection. Beyond the original, you can find barrel-aged bottles, which are rested in French Limousin oak casks for 18 months. You cannot miss Bombay Sapphire on the liquor shelf. Its blue bottle has an allure that will catch your eye, though the gin itself is not blue—look to Magellan Gin for that. Where would the Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Society have been without Isola’s infamous gin? Perhaps they wouldn’t have even formed their lifelong friendships … And they certainly wouldn't have had so much fun! Whereas Matt once found beauty in flies and blood cells, he found his passion in brewing. After leaving the world of academia behind and completing a Masters degree in Brewing and Distilling at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, he cut his teeth Down Under at Australia’s second largest brewer, Lion Nathan, where he helped, amongst other tasks, to develop new products.

The best part: This small-batch gin is consciously crafted. Gray Whale supports the conservation of our oceans through Oceana, and they have also partnered with 1% for the Planet. One percent of all Gray Whale sales go to environmental causes. In the run up to his PhD and post-doc studies in hematopoiesis (the formation of blood cell components from stem cells), Matt spent a summer at Cambridge University on a Royal Society internship studying bugs, specifically flies, and even more specifically, blue bottle flies. Under the microscope, he found the indigo wings of these household nuisances to shimmer intricate patterns of iridescence unique to the majesty of nature, patterns that people peeved by the pest do not perceive. Just as Amy V said when she suggested Thomas Dakin Gin for this list – it’s a very smart bottle indeed! Technically, one could make gin in a matter of hours, but Blue Bottle settles in stainless steel for three weeks before bottling. According to Matt, “There’s some alchemy in storing the gin that I don’t completely understand. The flavours blend and develop much better in those tanks, not unlike a stew which usually tastes better the day after it’s made.” Blue Bottle Gin is more than just a beverage; it is a story, from the world of meticulously selected botanicals to the majesty of the glass. It tells the account of a voyage in which workmanship has been mastered and tradition has been kept. Remember that, as you lift your glass of sapphire elixir, you are holding not only a spirit but also a record of artistic creation that connects the past and the present. Blue Bottle Gin is more than just a beverage; it’s a part of the epic story of gin’s history. Summary: Creating an Experience The “Blue Bottle Gin Chronicles:

Winner of 1 spirit awards

Fun fact: the bottle design was inspired by an old Victorian hip flask found at Notting Hill Market!] Aviation American Gincame to market in 2006. It was one of the first brands to launch that made everyone rethink the definition of gin. It was at the forefront of the New Western Gin movement, featuring a softer juniper profile and gins that are often handcrafted in small batches. This gin revolution has brought the spirit's appeal to a wider audience of drinkers. In short, the phrase "London dry" means that the spirit must be distilled in a column still to at least 70 percent alcohol by volume (A.B.V.). Natural botanicals can be added to the resulting neutral spirit only through re-distillation, but any additions after distillation beyond water and a little bit of sugar disqualify the gin from being considered a London dry. We love this bottle design from our friends over at Audemus Spirits who also created another gin on this list – Pink Pepper! The brand is named after George Chinnery, the English painter, who began his career in Dublin, before travelling to China. The bottle is inspired by these two parts of his career – Georgian Dublin and Imperial China.
